elephant's-head lousewort
pediculari groenlandica Retz.

Habitat is wet meadows, stream bank, wetland margins, spruce-fir forests, primarily in the mountains or the Cypress Hills, Alberta.

pedicularis means "louse" in Latin, refering to the belief that cattle eating hte plant were more likely to be affected by lice. Groenlandica means "of Greenland" althought the first specimens were more likely seen in Labrador.

The roots (and tender young stems before flowering) may be eaten raw or cooked, and the Inuit still dig the roots of hte species for a vegetable. Inuit children loved to suck the nectar from the base of the flower of a closely related species.

Although many louseworts are attractive plants, most can't be readily transplanted because they are semi-parasitic on the roots of other plants.

There are 12 species in Alberta, of which 5 are rare.

I photographed this flower down by the Bow River. It's the first time I have ever seen these variety of flower.

Hi Janice,
Wow, beautiful flower. I've been looking for flowers like this to photograph but never seem to see any. Nicely framed, good detail and exposure. The colours look a little washed out, maybe just a little more saturation would fix that. Nice shot and an interesting note.
Cheers,
Adrian

Nicely done, Janice. I think the soft light works well with the delicate flower. I am amazed at your naturalist skills identifying this and lots of other things, too. It might have been nice to shoot with a bit more zoom to get a bit more blur in the background, though I do like seeing the environment.
Mike
P.S. I have been meaning to get to Cypress Hills, but I haven't yet. How about you go take some shots there and guilt me into it, like you did with Birds of Prey (since I live so much closer to both of them)?
