The Sea buckthorn
Hippophae rhamnoides L.

A large native shrub that grows up to 20 feet tall, it has irregular growth habits and spiny branches. Male and female flowers occur on different plants and in order to product fruit both must be around.

The flowers are very small and appear before leafing out in the spring. The leaves are a silver colour and can withstand hot dry conditions. The Sea buckthorn grows in many different locations in Alberta and is extremely hardy. It will grow where no other plant may.

The birds love this shrub because of the thick spiny branches which may help protect them and the berries that are available in late summer and fall.

It is autumn all right!
Looks good on pictures, but elsewise not my favourite season...
This is a nice composition with good lines, colours and details are nice!

Love your notes & frame. Did you use the "invert" method to whiten the top & bottom the blacked them out?
The berries are so well focused that they look 3D. Shiney little things. Did you have to use filters?
Excellent composition. Looks like you cropped it TIGHT.

Ah! l'automne et ses petits fruits sauvages qui murissent un peu partout... Je suis moi aussi souvent preneur de ce genre de cliché.
Les couleurs sont belles, plus d'ouverture aurait peut-être permis un champs plus profond et plus de netteté, mais j'ai moi aussi ce problème depuis mon changement d'appareil et je n'arrive pas à trouver le bon reglage.
Belle photo néanmoins.

Hi Janice,
Are sea-buckthorns similar to a hawthorn?
I can't quite tell on this shot, but does the bush have long hard thorns? Inch to inch and a half long?

PS I just saw abt the silvery leaves; I think that answers the question... they are not the same, but perhaps related.
