Hi All,
Something a little different from me today an insect, don't faint. I shot this image in the Cypress Hills Provincial Park last summer and Lucy thought I was nuts, she is petrified of them but for good reasons she in highly allergic to their sting. Me not so much it just HURTS. with that being said I find if your calm they usual are calm too.

General Description

The large Paper Wasp (18 mm ) is found only in southeastern Alberta. It is slender, black and yellow with a spindle-shaped abdomen and the narrowly constricted waist that wasps are known for. Besides their black and yellow striping, casual bugwatchers out in the field can look for the characteristic way wasps hold their wings folded longitudinally and held at each side when at rest. Don�t be fooled by the various flies and even moths that mimic striped wasps.

The delicate paper nest is constructed beneath an overhang and consists of a single somewhat circular horizontal layer of open cells. The cells are closed up when the larva pupates. Paper wasps are not terribly aggressive but they will fight to protect the nest like all stinging social insects.

Adults hunt for caterpillars and other soft-bodied treats for the developing larvae. The adults feed at flowers like goldenrod.

Hi Rick,

I'm with Lucy - how could you get so close to these wasps? I'm allergic to them too but just to be stung by one is enough. Great shot so your risk paid off. It is fascinating to see this nest in such great condition. The wasps are in perfect focus and looks so innocent. We never know what to expect from you.
