Hi Rick this photo has a very nice light to it and yes you are correct about the snow looking blue at times and like the sky it is because of what is called Rayleigh scattering.I like white tail deer as they have a less angular look to them as compared to mule deer.This photo shows well where they live with great colour and sharp details.The blue depends on the time of day or rather the angle of the sun overhead.Thanks for sharing these two gentle creatures with us,it looked like it was a fairly cold day.

Yes that one tail most certainly is showing clearly becoming a sort of jump off point for the remainder of the photo!

Good day Rick! Let me start with my note that I like a lot this quite peaceful scene here! A lot! In my opinion however this is another demonstration of incorrect White balance. Make no mistake Rick, some like it that way,... it enhanced the feeling of the cold winter days ... and some dont! Let me use that wonderful opportunity to present my opinion on that mater however.
The purpose of white balance is to equalize colors based on the lighting conditions. Winter conditions can cause camera sensors to misjudge the white balance. This will usually cause snow to look bluish as in your example image. the deep snow really gives you a good shot of the animals. These doe are really well captured as I know they are fast runner and could disappear so easily.

Bonjour Rick,
Belle publication valorisant relativement bien les sujets dans leur environnement et sous une belle lumière ; je regrette toutefois le manque de profondeur de champ sur le deuxième animal ce qui me semble avoir pour effet de l'exclure de la scène ou du moins de le mettre très en retrait.

Hello Rick,
I guess it can depend on taste, but I prefer a bluish tinge in snowy conditions when the lighting causes it.
It may be the camera sensor but one can look at it another way: the brain interprets colours accorcding to desire. Who knows, the blue end of the spectrum may be emphasised by the snow but the brain wants it all white! I'm not joking!
For me this image is just right: the subjects are well seen and the composition is a nicely balanced division of light and shade taken to a high technical standard.

for me the color tones of this beautiful image
is well balanced, here i love the bluer tones
of the color, it shows us or it gives us
the colder color tones of the snow and the cold,
your photo is very well shooted with a very fine POV
and the way the dears are framed on the image

What a nice meeting with this two White-tails! So beautiful and interesting animals. The colours are great and natural with the blue shadows. It is exaclty the colours we have here on snow when there is some sun. But last days, we have only snow! Winter is not over... Cheers,

Hi Rick,

It's hard to believe you have all that snow while we are having a warm December. There hasn't been any rain for weeks so our deer have their problems too. I have always loved these candid shots of yours and this one is no exception. A wonderfully natural winter scene and a great title.
