Out hiking last weekend I came across this strange looking Mushroom. I'm guessing it's a type of puffball. It was approximately 5 inches tall (12 cm) and maybe 4 inches across (9 cm)

I thought it was really unique looking and captured it laying down on the ground. It was in the shade and the lighting was nice and soft which brought the detail of this big guy.

UPDATE: Thank you Laszlo (Hormon Manyer) for the proper ID, it's called a Calvatia utriformis.

Hi Janice. It sure looks a large one and one i have never seen so thanks for posting on TN. I like your low POV . We can see every detail on the skin. Which you have taken natural colours. well done TFs.
Nick..

Hi Janice,

A Calvatia specie for sure, probably a young Calvatia utriformis (= Lycoperdon utriforme) or something else very similar. Great macro.

Best wishes, László

Hi Janice,

That's an amazing image! You've certainly captured terrific details and colour. It almost looks like something from another planet. TFS.

See you,
John

Hallo Janice
Very interesting. I think I can help you with the identification. It is according to my knowledge "A big fat mushroom" - Ha-ha. Oops, sorry that is all I know. I am really going to get very clever on this site, because I have learned more in the time I have been part of Trek Nature than all the Biology and Geography lessons I had whilst being at school, and it is so much fun too. I really like the sight of this huge fungi in the shape of a "chefs hat". Thanks for sharing.
Best regards.
Anna

Hello Janice
What a strange mushroom, but you have taken it very sharply, the structure is well seen, nice surroundings and very good natural colors
TFS and have a great WE

Hello Janice,
Your right about it's unique shape, this almost reminds me of an upside down elephants foot. Super detail with very natural colors. Love the low POV. Excellent exposure and great DOF.
