Least Weasel (Mustela nivalis)

The Least Weasel is the smallest living carnivore in Alberta. It's a beneficial predator eating mice, insects and other pests. It's quite small at only 8 inches long (20cm) and weighs a mere 2.5 ounces (70g)

It's found throughout Alberta and is classified as secure according to the General Status of Alberta Wild Species.

This tiny little weasel had a short tail which lacked a black tip. It's feet are white and in winter this weasel turns completely white.

Females may give birth from three to five young and it could be any month of the year.

Hello Janice,
Awesome capture!! I would be thrilled to get a shot of one of these elusive critters. This is one very secretive animal her in Ohio, I have only seen a few in my entire lifetime.
Captured in an attractive alert pose and in fine detail. I love it's beautiful cinnamon brown coat and snow white belly. Wonderful eye contact with just a hint of catchlight. Impressive!!

Hello Janice,
