Today we went out to Murray Lake for an hour and had the treat of watching this Eared Grebe family with Mom and Dad feeding the young and carrying them on their backs. They seemed to be all very busy.

Eared Grebe
Podiceps nigricollis
General Description

By Andrew Slater

The Eared Grebe breeds across the prairie and parkland belts of southern and central Alberta. It winters on the west coast, and in the south west U.S.A. and in Mexico.

It arrives on the prairies in mid April and leaves by mid October. Between these months, it is one of the commonest birds on prairie sloughs.

The Eared Grebe feeds on all forms of aquatic life to be found in prairie and parkland sloughs. It both dabbles on the surface and makes shallow dives.

It is a colonial nester, in covering vegetation along the shores of lakes, ponds and marshes. The nests are anchored to submerged vegetation and mounds of mud, and consist of floating platforms of decaying vegetation.

My friend Rick, how glad I am to see you're back and to see your picture! This is such a pretty scene, with the mother feeding the chicks. I really like the red eye attracting all the attention almost at the centre of the frame... it's incredibly red! Thank you Rick, I'll go visit your pictures that I missed!

Hi Rick,

It's so nice seeing posts from you two days in a row!!! This parent feeding the young is so sweet - and so colorful. I can't believe that red eye. Lovely details of the faces and plummage. I love light and movement of the water. You and Lucy must have had a wonderful day.

Hello Rick,
We were hoping to see this lovely Grebe on a trip we made up north this spring but we didn't succeed - they're very rare here. This is a lovely capture seeing it with its young. Great focus on the lovely eye red eye and fine colours.
Many thanks, Ulla
