General Description

By Nora Bryan

This large white, heavily feathered owl breeds in the high arctic. In years of abundant prey, few owls may migrate. In years where prey is scarce, large numbers of males migrate south across much of Canada. Immatures may travel even further south into the States.

Look for this owl in open fields and marshes from November through March, particularly in those winters when large numbers of owls migrate from the north. You might find them on the ground, on fence posts or telephone poles as they survey the snowy terrain for a morsel.

Lemmings form the bulk of this bird's diet in the tundra. Hares, rodents, birds and even carrion constitutes much of this great white bird's diet on its southern wintering grounds.

Snowy Owls breed in the high arctic tundra. Nests are no more than shallow depressions on a mound or gravel ban, supplemented with feathers and scraps of moss. Clutch size varies with prey abundance. Three to ten white eggs are incubated for more than a month, and young are fledged 14 to 28 days after hatching.

Hello Rick,
What a beautiful Snowy Owl you have chosen to post today. Those gorgeous yellow eyes in contrast to it's snow white plumage is simply stunning to view.
It's funny, but I just read an article on the internet about how there is an explosion of Snowy Owls migrating into the upper half of the US.

Hello Rick,
It's a pleasure to see you with a new photo.
Beautiful photo in fine natural colours and with the focus on the eyes. Maybe you can crop a little bit from the right side. It's very empty there. Nice blurred background too.
Regards,
Peter

Hello Rick
Wonderful capture! I read that a lot of Snowy Owls invaded the South region this winter.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Rick,

Does this mean your wrist surgery went well and you are back in action?
We are jealous of your snowy owls so close at hand. We were very lucky to locate one of the visitors to our neck of the woods. Jerry got a pretty good shot. It seems all the snowies that come this far south are juveniles therefore not pure white. We were still thrilled to see him.

Great shot... TFS
