Twelve-Spotted Skimmer - Libellula pulchella

The Twelve-Spotted Skimmer is among the most common dragonflies—and among the most attractive. The Latin species name, in fact, means "pretty." The twelve brown wing spots are on both males and females, matures and immatures, and make identification of this species a snap.

Males have not only the twelve brown spots, but also a number of white spots on the wings like the male pictured above.
Look for this species almost anywhere except along fast-moving streams. Lakes, ponds, marshes, and slow streams are all favored habitats. Watch for the male territorial behavior. Males will sit on weed tops, flying out to meet any intruding males. The two males have a stylized contest, in which each tries to fly loop-the-loops around the other. Whichever one succeeds returns to his perch, while the other moves out of the territory.

I was walking around Mill Lake in Abbotsford, BC when I spotted this beautiful dragonfly. I had to wait almost an hour to get the right moment to take this picture. ;o)

bonjour lea
une jolie espece que je n'ai jamais vu en france,je suppose qu'elle n'est pas presente ici.
elle est un peu trop exposée et centrée mais bien net et le BG vert la met bien en valeur.

Hi!
Nice shot of that Skimmer!
Good sharpness - perhaps I`d seen all of that brown plant sharp.
(F.ex. with a higher ISO-speed and a step or two higher aperture than f/3.7) But that is a detail of little significans.
I also like the background very much here, the blurred black and green is matching well.

Jon :)
