I don't know the proper names for these birds, and I don't think the birds really care if I get it right either. :-)
I like this image for the birds have good contrast against the brown rough-textured rocks with their slick black and red bodies. The bird on the left appears to be standing on one leg while its beak is open.
Despite the 1/125 second shutter, the birds suffer from a bit of motion blur.

Dear John
I applaud your idea of using rocks to show the birds in context and to provide an interesting pattern of color background. You have captured the feeling of the birds being so close to the ocean. Too bad about the focus or motion blur.
