This Great Blue Heron stood for a very long time in the Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park, Vancouver focusing on the water even without “blinking”. This concentration reminded me of a Tamil proverb which states that “the stork ( or heron or crane) will wait patiently and let all the small fish go away only to catch the big one at the right time”. In such a case concentration is very important.
According to a study Herons consume an estimated 300 g of fish daily and are estimated to assimilate 75-80 percent of the energy from their diet (http://www.pugetsoundnearshore.org/technical_papers/herons.pdf ) They eat nearly anything within striking distance, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, insects, and other birds. They grab smaller prey in their strong mandibles or use their dagger-like bills to impale larger fish, often shaking them to break or relax the sharp spines before gulping them down. They defend feeding territories from other herons with dramatic displays in which the birds approach intruders with their head thrown back, wings outstretched, and bill pointing skyward. Gulls and even humans may also be a target of this defensive maneuver (https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Great_Blue_Heron/lifehistory ).
I tried my level best to keep the background without any disturbance, But could not avoid those stumps and branches. |

Hello Bala,
One of the most common birds in the region where I live.
Nice photo in good sharpness and details. Beautiful natural colors.

Have to agree with you on the "no blinking and storking" for fun one day I watched a similar blue heron for a 1 1/2 hr. and it was as if he was of stone, then zapppppppp caught a fish, but I was so tired of watching that did not even have time to snap one.
for your background disturbance it is natural to not disturb their environment.
You seem to have a rich collection of nature images from the past which you are sharing with us here on TN, Bala.
This is a fabulous capture of a Heron with its eyes focused on water and your interpretation of the posture through a proverb makes the image quite interesting.
From this point of view, its plumage and the range of colors on it are well captured.
Thanks and regards.
Ram
hello Bala,
Ce héron est superbe, dans un environnement naturel.
Bien vu avec le début du reflet des pattes.
Bon dimanche
