|[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note|
|This is the underbelly of a cat-faced spider (Araneus gemmoides). At the fag end of summer, the birds have started flying out of Stanley park in Vancouver and the winter birds are yet to arrive. Hence with my macro lens I was scouting the park and found this spider. |
I did not know much about this spider. It was struggling to weave the web which was being continuously disturbed by the heavy breeze ( reminded me of King Robert the Bruce and the spider story).
I was fascinated by the skull-type part which I assumed as its face. But when I referred to the University of Washington, I found out that I had taken the photo of the underbelly of the spider (http://entomology.wsu.edu/outreach/bug-info/cat-face/ ).
The female cat-spider dies as soon as it lays the eggs. The young spiders have cannibal behavior. I found beautiful description of how a spider weaves its web in http://animals.howstuffworks.com/arachnids/spider5.htm . Spiders play an important role as beneficial predator keeping the population of many insect pests under control.
This was my first attempt in trying to macro-photo an insect. My apologies to TN members who have responded to my earlier photos. I have not been able to access TN with certain internet providers. I am hoping to rectify this soon.
