This Stellar's Jay came to see us as we got out of our truck at Cameron Lake. With blue being my favorite color you can understand why I like this species so much.

Steller's Jay
Cyanocitta stelleri
>

General Description

By Nora Bryan

This dark iridescent blue cousin of the Blue Jay is a bird of the mountains. In Alberta it lives only in the mountains. It may breed in the southern Rockies around Waterton, and is sometimes seen in Banff and Jasper. It is far more common west of the continental divide, in BC.

Steller's Jays prefer montane coniferous forests above 1200 metres. In winter they might be attracted to feeders in mountain towns, where they share the bold and aggressive habits of their blue-jay cousins.

Like other corvids, the Steller's Jay is an opportunistic feeder. Everything from nestlings to nuts might make a tasty meal. Once emboldened, they will take food scraps readily at campsites.

The bulky nest of twigs, bark and leaves is molded with mud and lined with grass and rootlets. The three to five bluish green eggs are marked with brown. Young are fledged 18 days after an incubation period of 16 days.

Hi Rick,

what a lovely specimen you've caught here, the pose and details of the marking in his feathers are great. Would this be the same bird that Toronto's baseball team is named ofter by any chance??

tfs and have a great weekend,

Paul

Stunning photo! Lively colours. Interesting shades of blue. A real “kuifkop”. Just look at the sharpness of the beak. Very sharp.Thank you for sharing. I loved your notes and found it interesting. If you where thinking of returning a smiley to me, sorry you can’t but please have a look at some of these members portfolios. I personally think some of these shots deserve a big smiley and because you cannot award your points to me, (look at my intro page for the reason) you might consider to give them to one of these members beautiful photos. It cannot be missed. Maybe you have seen some of them, maybe not. There are so many but I include only a few links.

Just remember that 2 pairs of eyes, see things totally different, and you might disagree with my choice, and think I am cuckoos. Writing critiques is a learning school for me, and because I am not a photographer I do not see and look for finer details like you guys. So if you received a smiley from me, it is because I just LOVED what I saw, and it is much appreciated.

They are beautiful birds indeed Rick. I wonder if like their cousins, they are "black" in real... I wonder if it's the same light refraction phenomenon that goes on with them too... I also wonder if they can be seen in Quebec. So many questions :)

This is an excellent capture of this beauty. I love this light in its eye, its pose that you captured and those great details. It is beautiful. By looking at the picture again, I guess that this phenomenon of light refraction must also happens with its lower feathers which are very similar to the Blue Jay and its top feathers are black...Ah! Ah! I think I got my own answer ;) Thanks,
Claudine

Very nice blue color bird!

Hello Rick,
Great shot of a Stellar's Jay, reminding me of when I saw it in Yosemite NP many years ago. Nice sharpness, colour and composition.
If only I could have taken a shot like this when I was in California!

Hi Rick,

He is beautiful - I've never seen a Steller Jay. Magnificent colors - I love the blue and black with the little touch of the white of his eye. Marvelous details with his crest, beak, wing patterns and wonderful plummage.

Jane

Nice shot. What a beautiful bird. Dont have this species in Illinois, but I wish we did.

Heart-warming picture of a different kind of Jay, Rick. I too get knocked over by blue color. To me, it looks certainly better than the normal Blue Jay.
You got the right pose here; the bird looks beautiful from this perspective.
Well done and TFS.
