The Viceroy Butterfly (Limenitis archippus) is a North American butterfly with a range from the Northwest Territories along the eastern edges of the Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada mountains, southwards into central Mexico.

Asclepias fascicularis is a species of milkweed known by the common names narrowleaf milkweed and Mexican whorled milkweed. It is a flowering perennial sending up many thin, erect stems and bearing distinctive long pointed leaves which are very narrow and often whorled about the stem, giving the plant its common names. It blooms in clusters of lavender or lavender-tinted white flowers which have five reflexed lobes that extend down away from the blossom. The fruits are smooth milkweed pods which split open to spill seeds along with plentiful silky hairs. This plant is common in the western United States and has the potential to become weedy.

The Viceroy is a new one to me, but it looks like one of the large ones such as swallowtail. Very nice image. I see you really have been saving those special ones! Nice colors. It's sort of nice seeing them at this time of year..at least on TN.
Bob

Viceroy is an interesting name for this different looking butterfly, Claude.

The sharpness is excellent and the colors quite vital.

Francine

Nice work keeping the butterfly parallel to the sensor so it is all in sharp focus. Color is well saturated and looks natural.

Hi Claude,
splendidly rich colours and details on this perfectly presented Viceroy on milkweed. Very well decribing butterfly and habitat, and a wonderful, powerful image of summer.
Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter

Hello Claude,

A superb image, absolutely beautiful. Excellent composition and the focus is spot on. No complaints regarding this photo.

However, I think you might want to double-check your ID of the flower, as it is definitely not an Asclepias, the flowers are all wrong for that genus, looks like something in the Eupatorium genus, probably one of the Joe Pye Weeds.
