[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [French]
Here is a Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum, 18 cm) that I photographed yesterday in the Parc Nature Pointe-aux-Prairies in Montreal. I had seen this bird before but I never had the chance to get a good picture of it. This one has a little twig in the front but I don't think it's that bad.

The Cedar Waxwing is one of the most frugivorous birds in North America. Many aspects of its life, from its nomadic habits to its late breeding season, may be traced to its dependence upon fruit.
Medium-sized songbird.
Gray-brown overall.
Crest on top of head.
Black mask edged in white.
Yellow tip to tail; may be orange.
Size: 14-17 cm (6-7 in)
Wingspan: 22-30 cm (9-12 in)
Weight: 32 g (1.13 ounces)
Sex Differences
Sexes nearly alike.
Calls are very high pitched "bzeee" notes.
Conservation Status
Populations increasing throughout range. You can help scientists learn more about this species by participating in the Celebrate Urban Birds! project.
Other Names
Jaseur d' Amérique (French)
Ampelis Americano, Picotera, Chinito (Spanish)
Cool Facts
The name "waxwing" comes from the waxy red appendages found in variable numbers on the tips of the secondaries of some birds. The exact function of these tips is not known, but they may serve a signaling function in mate selection.
Cedar Waxwings with orange instead of yellow tail tips began appearing in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada beginning in the 1960s. The orange color is the result of a red pigment picked up from the berries of an introduced species of honeysuckle. If a waxwing eats the berries while it is growing a tail feather, the tip of the feather will be orange.
The Cedar Waxwing is one of the few temperate dwelling birds that specializes in eating fruit. It can survive on fruit alone for several months. Unlike many birds that regurgitate seeds from fruit they eat, the Cedar Waxwing defecates fruit seeds.
The Cedar Waxwing is vulnerable to alcohol intoxication and death after eating fermented fruit.

Hi Mario,

What, no berries? Most of the pictures of the Cedar Waxwings on TN are in trees with berries and the bird having a dirty face! I think he is just beautiful. The face, wings and plummage are shown in wonderful details and with marvelous colors.

Hi Mario, Les grands détails très beaux d'un oiseau..., le foyer est parfait, les couleurs sont... excellents work..TFS tellement pointus et propres

Not that bade? I know people who would kill for a shot like that.
I still have to see my first one in nature, the more I do appreciate this High Quality image.
Despite going to 400mm - you must have been quite close to get it that good and clear, which leaves me with the mystery on how you guys manage to get that close. Sitting in wait?
Cheers, Klaus

A beautiful picture of the Cedar Waxwing. The twig doesn't bother the photo at all. In fact, it adds to the naturalness of the pose. Congratulations, Mario. Bob Zeller

Hello Marion
This is really a dood picture of cedar waxbill
Great light and details

Bonjour Mario,
The branch in the foreground is not really that bad, I think the perfect exposure and excellent lighting make up for the minor detail, it makes the subject feel like it's more in a 3-D environment and in my opinion does'nt degrade the image at all. You captured it very nicely. :)

I hear that these guys have started arriving in Texas, however I have not seen one yet. This is a great shot. Wonderful colors and details.

Hi Mario, elegant bird in nice pose, splendid colors, perfect focus, wonderful details and superb sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio
