Chinook Arch

Last night we had a Chinook Arch during the sunset. Yesterday I posted a close up of the clouds, this image shows more of the arch. The arch stretched far to the NW and also to the SE.

When the Chinook Arch arrived over Cochrane last night the winds really picked up, they even woke me up. Sometimes the winds can get up to 100 km/hr.

There was a wind warning yesterday in the Pincher Creek and Waterton Lakes areas, and is normal when Chinooks arrive. Pincher Creek and Waterton are the one of the windiest areas in Alberta.

Hi Janice,

What a dramatic image! It looks like Cochrane is being descended upon by some gigantic orange storm cloud. You've picked up the vivid colors of the sunset very well in your shot.

When I used to live in Calgary, we had a view of the mountains from our deck. Whenever a Chinook was forming, we would see a sweeping arch in the west over the mountains. I've seen the temperature go from -20C to +20C in a day.

Hello Janice

That thing is ominous looking, like it will part and reveal the hidden mothership.
The colours and lighting are well done.
Excellent POV,the silhouette of the ridge and treetops is very effective.

Hey, aren't pictures of clouds how you got started here, Janice? This is one fantastic scene -- the shape details and colors in the clouds really make it. I find the trees along the bottom to be a bit ugly, but I think they add a nice context.
Mike
P.S. I've seen the temp go from -20 to +15 in one HOUR! (I think it was March 2008.) But how WINDY was it? -- I like the +15, but I don't like the 100 km/hr winds!

Hi Janice,
I missed this one. This one is even more spectacular. The different shades and the shapes in the cloud are very beautiful. I've never seen such a sky for real and would love to experience it.
TFS,
Niek

I wanted to come back to tell you how much this picture impresses me. The colours are just fantastic and the arch or cover made by the clouds must be very impressive. I love the clear blue sky being invaded by the thick salmon clouds. Une merveille,

Francine

Amazing, the power and beauty of mother nature. This is very good shot with exellent color and light, the fiery cloud against the bright sky and the silhouette of the trees and slope creat a beautiful composition. Thanks
