Spruce grouse
Dendragapus canadensis

I came across a family of Spruce grouse while on a hike in the mountains. Shown here is the female, her two young were on the ground below her. Spruce grouse often use there camouflage to hide from predators instead of flying away.

The Spruce grouse can be found year round in Alberta including other provinces and northern U.S. states with coniferous forests. They require either boreal forest, wet spruce forests to pine forests to reproduce.

During the winter the Spruce grouse consumes a diet of mainly conifer needles and in the summer it will feed on leaves, berries, seeds, pine needles, leaves and insects.

Hi Janice,

You really nailed that shot! The eye, beak and feathers are all terrific! I see that you had your lens fully extended to 85mm. You must have been very close to that bird. As it always seems to be, you never really observe all of the details of a bird or other creature until you have the opportunity to see a well taken photo. TFS.

See you,

Hi Janice,
You normally don't come across these birds. It takes hour if not days of patience to see one. Especially with a pose like you captured here.
I am amazed that you captured the bird with only 85 mm. The details are wonderful and the colors are in a perfect natural condition.

Hello Janice,
I don't know about up north, but to be able to even get this close to a grouse in our neck of the woods is a fantastic feat in itself.
The composition is perfect, the plumage is incredibly beautiful and the detail is super fine. I take my hat off to you! This image could easily hang on my wall!!!

Hello Janice,
Great shot of this female Spruce grouse. The luminosity, plumage details & sharpness is perfect to make it good wildlife shot. TFS & have a nice weekend.

Hi Janice,
The spruce grouse be in the spruce tree, yes. Exceptional capture Janice with wonderful details and colours in her plumage. The fact that the little ones were near helped with your close approach most likely. I love that she was at camera level, she probably doesn't see too many people so she want to see the pretty young lady, boy am I sucking up or what. I'm just jealous this image wasn't mine. Great work Janice.

Hi MCF Janice,

Amazingly beautiful capture of this lovely faced bird, the details and exposure both look excellent. I like the POV you've captured it too.
TFS and have a nice night MF!
