Hi All,
I believe this to be a Loggerhead Shrike juvenile if I am wrong please correct me. He has captured a work in Jenner last summer.

Loggerhead Shrike
Lanius ludovicianus

General Description

By Jim Davis

The Loggerhead Shrike is widely distributed throughout Mexico, the United States, and the southern Prairie Provinces. Its breeding range is midwestern continental, and in Canada is almost entirely restricted to southern; Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The preferred habitat is lightly wooded river valleys, with a preference for thorny buffaloberry bushes. North American populations are in decline, and in Canada is officially designated as a 'threatened species'. A summer visitor, this extremely rare bird in Alberta usually migrates into the province in May, leaving for its wintering grounds by early September.

The diet consists of small birds and mammals which are often impaled, hence the nickname 'butcher bird', on thorn bushes such as buffaloberry, due to the shrikes lacking talons to hold the prey while it is being eaten.

The nest is in shrubs and trees about 3m above ground level, and is made of twigs and grass lined with feathers. The female lays 4-7 spotted grey eggs, incubated by the female for 16 days. Fledging is at 19 days.

Hi Rick

Great capture of this little bird on a wire. I am not familiar with the Loggerhead Shrike
so thanks for the introduction. I really like the shrike (Laniidae) family of birds including
all the groupings i.e. shrikes, helmetshrikes, puffback shrikes, bush shrikes, tchagras,
and also the boubous. Especially the bush shrikes have some very colourful birds and
although the are rather shy and seldom seen they are a real feast for the eyes. I am no
specialist in this field though, I merely enjoy them, so I cannot confirm the ID of this little
one. However, from what I can see in my books and on Wikipedia it seems to me that
you are 100% correct. A lovely sharp image with a nice POV, great colours and a neat
BG to compliment the subject.

Well done MF and TFS.

Hi Rick,

This Loggerhead Shrike (yet another bird I have not met in person) is so beautiful posing on the wires. His wonderful face, plumage and wings are shown in excellent detail and color. I love the eye shining through the black eye mask. His beak is shining. The background and the composition are terrific.
