Eastern Kingbird
Tyrannus tyrannus

General Description

By Jim Davis

The Eastern Kingbird breeds throughout Canada, excluding the Arctic and west coast, and throughout the United States, excluding the southwest. It is widely distributed in southern Alberta in the southern grasslands, aspen parkland, and southern boreal forest.

The Eastern Kingbird is a neotropical migrant that winters in South America. It is found wherever it can hunt flying insects, preferring open sites such as woodland edges, and riparian habitat.

Their diet is flying insects, supplemented by fruit in winter.

The nest is built in low trees and bushes usually over water, as well as on stumps and fenceposts. The nest appears bulky and is constructed with grass and other fibrous material, with a finer lining. The female lays 2-5 creamy-white eggs with dark brown spots. The eggs are incubated primarily by the female for 13 days. The pair tend to their young which fledge after 17 days. Although nests are commonly parasitized by Cowbirds (whose eggs are a similar color, but much more heavily spotted) this Kingbird usually has the good sense to give a heave-ho to any unwanted eggs.

Hi Rick
Gosh it's a good think Lucy draws the line in some instances ; )
The lighting in this image is just right, not to soft and not harsh at all...yours never are. I like the way the tall grass is surrounding this King Bird, it's a magical effect. Lovely portrait!!! We see these King birds many times when we canoe the Red Deer River. The area is a bird magnet.

Hi Rick,

Good for Lucy!! Hi Lucy. This Kingbird is gorgeous. Not very nice of them not to come down to the Southwest though. This bird looks so beautiful in this lovely summer setting. A wonderful pose on the branch showing off the handsome face, sparkling eye, and beautiful wings. Superb colors, details, setting and composition.

hello Rick

superb focus sharpness and details, beautiful luminosity,

Hallo Rick
Bravo for taking your camera to work, bringing back the beautiful Eastern Kingbird to share. It has a very proud pose; therefore the "king" part in its name is very appropriate. I really fancy the background, as it not only very colourful but it also brings out the details of this lovely bird to its best. This image is one of those I consider a PPP - Pretty, perfect, picture and will go straight to my theme where it rightfully belongs. Best regards and thanks for sharing.
