Hi All,
I found this momma Killdeer setting on her clutch of eggs at one of our facilities at work last July. The nest is just an indentation in the gravel. when she was off the nest the eggs were very hard to see.

Charadrius vociferus

General Description

By Gustave J. Yaki

The Killdeer breeds exclusively in the Americas, from southern Canada to central Mexico, the West Indies, and in Peru. Its summer range includes all of Alberta.

While it does occur along shorelines, it often favours open upland areas such as fields and short grass pastures in rural areas, and large playing fields, golf courses, airports and gravel parking lots in urban areas. An early spring migrant, the first birds appear by mid March. Most leave in the autumn, but a few can always be found along the Bow River in the early winter months. As many as 18 have been found on one day in January. Numbers decline as winter proceeds, likely picked off by predators such as Merlin or Coyotes.

Insects, mostly beetles and grasshoppers are major food items.

The nest is a shallow scrape, usually in sand, gravel or short-grass, on upland sites such as pastures, along gravel roads, railways, even on gravel rooftops. Often double-brooded, the first nest is underway by late April. The well-camouflaged eggs are incubated by both sexes for 24 days. As soon as they hatch, the young are led to the nearest shore. They are brooded and guarded, but find their own food. They fly when about 40 days old. Killdeer often raise two broods

Hi Rick,
Beautiful shot, even the colors aren't too different, the killdeer and the pebbles together are great visual impact. Fantastic lights and sharpness. Personally I should have cropped a little more from the oof foreground, but I admit the image is good as it is. Congrats and tfs.
Have a nice weekend, László

Hello Rick,
A superb capture of a brooding Killdeer. Though she is well camouflaged among the pebbles you took her with fine sharpness and colours from a great low POV. The lighting is just right too.
Thanks and have a great WE,

Thanks for your congrats on our curling ladies winning the gold! They have managed to defend their title with a bit of luck, though I see that Canada leads the medals table - congratulations!

Hi Rick. You weer lucky to have seen this small Killdeer as it blends into the BG so well. You used the light well to give natural colours along with fine feather detail. Well taken TFS.

Rick.. those eggs look like the stones that surround them.
You encourage me to get more images.
Mario with greetings from Calgary.

Good detail Rick. This is the first time I've seen their eggs. She seems a little central in the picture. Maybe leaving more space above her would clear that up. The DOF is good and you got a good side pose from her. Very nicely done. TFS Trevor

Hi Rick,

It's wonderful to see this Kildeer and one of her pretty eggs. I would never have guessed that would be a nest. Nice colors and details of her face, eye and feathers. Are you ready for the big hockey game tomorrow??? I'm sure we're not rooting for the same team :-)

Hi Rick,

I've never caught a Killdeer on a nest. Your photo is very well taken. The details and colours of the feathers and the glimpse of one of the gravel-like eggs are terrific. I noted in my iBird Explorer iPod app that egg incubation is done by both parents. It's interesting that they don't spend much effort making a nice nest. It's as though they're trying to hatch a few little stones. TFS.

Hi Rick.
Perfect shot of a lovely scene. I am amazed with subject and terrific quality of the shot. Small stones and simply charming bird are reproduced with ultimate exactness. Light blurriness of the BG is decorate the image by the best way too. Bravo. Well done.
