Boreal Whiteface

Common Name: Boreal Whiteface
Latin Name: Leucorrhinia borealis Hagen, 1890
(R. Bercha, det.)

Length: 37 - 39 mm

Range: Throughout Alberta

Habitat: Fens, ponds and sedge marshes

Time of year seen: Late May to August

Diet: Insects

Other: At ~39mm the Boreal Whiteface is the largest of Alberta's whitefaces. As with all Whitefaces it has a triangular black mark at the base of each hind wing and black legs. The top of abdominal segments S2 to S7 in females and S2 to S8 in males have continuous yellow or red marks. The chin is colored black. Immature specimens have yellow markings which turn red upon maturity in both females and males. This dragonfly is found near prairie ponds, sedge marshes and fens. (Canning, 2002, and Dunkle, 2000

Quite nice dragonfly shot, probably I should have darkened it a bit more with gamma correction, but sharpness is OK and the nice classical composition works also. Great pose, and overall a fine photo taken from a well chosen POV. Congrats and tfs.
