White-Faced Meadowhawk
Sympetrum obtrusum

The various Meadowhawks are often hard to tell apart, but if you have a mature male specimen of Sympetrum obtrusum, there is no mistaking it with other species: the face is bright white, a trait not shared with others in the genus. Other traits of the mature male White-Faced Meadowhawk include a bright red abdomen with black triangular markings toward the rear. Males also have a small amber-colored patch at the base of the wings.
Females and immature males begin life with a yellow abdomen. In females this gradually fades to olive-brown or even a dull red color. The females and immature males begin life with a yellow face.
The bad news is that until a Sympetrum obtrusum has developed its white face, it is utterly impossible to tell it apart from the Cherry-Faced and Ruby Meadowhawks found in Quebec.
In West Virginia this species is not as common as the Autumn Meadowhawk or Ruby Meadowhawk, though it may be locally common. It often lives near forests, and may be found at ponds, swamps, acidic bogs, and even slow streams. The White-Faced Meadowhawks have a long flight season, stretching from early summer through fall.

You know, I begin to have pleasure by taking photos. I am more relaxed, more in quiet expectation, a reserved impatience. I do not still master all the parameters. I learns the patience and it helps for the other activities of my life. I do not know if it is the same for you. I am more curious also! ;-)

Thank you for looking.

Beautiful Confrontation with this White-Faced Meadowhawk !
Colors and POV are excellent.
I think that he is in position of takeoff ?
TFS. Nico.

Hi Luc,
you made a wonderful shot from the front.
Very good sharpness and colours.
When I saw this I decided to show a bug today, not the dragonfly I first wantet. Yours is so beautiful, perhaps tomorrow mine is coming.
Thanks for sharing your pretty insect.

Great front-shot Luc! Colors are great, details are sharp and the POV is good. Compositionwise I would have chosen to have a little more space in the top. TFS!

Salut, Luc. You have been coming up with some very interesting and unusual POVs for dragonflies. You are showing us totally different perspectives on how to look at this beautiful insect. I thank you for the lesson. TFS. : )

Stunning capture, your DOF could not be any more perfect. Wonderful colors, and an especially great POV with the camera looking him in the face.

P.S. I'll be in Quebec in October!!

Very nice shot, with a rare POV. Excellent sharpness and colors. TFSW!

great shot! the plant is great, but in association with this dragonfly - is awesome. great dof! well done.

I love how the wings almost parallel the twig it is on and you are a master at DOF control which is so hard on macro shots.

It's a beauty, Luc.
Sorry I have missed it.
Well composed. good POV and details.
Great work, my brother.

Congrats for you 10K well earned green ones.
