|A chicken-like secretive bird of freshwater swamps and marshes. More ofter heard than seen, The Virginia Rail tends to remain hidden in dense vegetation. |
While walking on a seldom used boardwalk in a park / wetland in Northern Ontario I heard the distinctive call of this Rail. It was probably a warning call to her chicks as to my surprise they happened to run almost right across my feet from one side of the marsh to the other. I backed up and waited for a minute or two and up came 'mom' who stopped very briefly to have a look at me before quickly scurrying back into the vegetation. She appeared a couple more times to check me out, but this was the best shot I was able to get. Low light (overcast) meant using a higher ISO than I prefer, but still I'm happy to get a shot of this seldom seen beauty.

Wow great Rail. How rare this is to have one of these in the open. Dof is a little shallow I think. I saw one of these, or similiar in Florida a few years ago, I didn't know they were this far north. Very nice.

Good bird and story, nice pose, clean image at high ISO. The background, well .. they should make those conservation places more photographer friendly.
I would try a bit more aggressive sharpening and contrast for posting.
Another bird that I have not seen before and therefore I am thankful you shared it with us. Its big paws and long bill is very obvious and I like the position you captured it in showing its profile beautifully. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
Il me semble qu'il d'un tout petit peu de profondeur de champ mais le sujet est tout de même relativement bien valorisé dans une belle lumière qui fait resplendir les couleurs.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.

Good thing you knew what they sounded like, otherwise you may have missed this wonderful shot. The colors of it's plumage is very beautiful and the focus is tac sharp. Attractive eye contact and nicely composed. Great work!!
