Lancet Clubtail, Gomphe exilé
Gomphus exilis

Adult size: 39-48 mm

Habitat: A marshy pond, lake, stream and river species. Can be seen perched on rocks along water bodies and running water, particularly those with a soft bottom; also, often seen perched on open ground or on rocks a considerable distance from water, such as along woodland dirt roads .

Flight period: In the Canadian Maritimes (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island), emerges in late May and flies into late August (dates May 20th Nova Scotia- Sept 5th Nova Scotia)

ID hints: The abdomen is only moderately clubbed. The outer, lateral edges of segment 8 and 9 have bright yellow patches that can be seen in flight. The dorsal surface of segment 9 usually shows a wide, yellow stripe. There are also yellow stripes running the length of the dorsum.

General Nature Notes: One of our most common clubtails, it can be the most abundant species along some marshy edged ponds and smaller streams. The species gets its name from the male’s lancet-shaped cerci (upper claspers). When disturbed, the male may perform a series of U-shaped aerial manoeuvres some 3 m above the ground.
