Hello friends, this squirrel was injured by one of its back feet
and his tail was cut, he was certainly attacked by a predator,
the harsh law of nature, looking him like that it hurt my heart.

1/4000s f/5.6 ISO1600 85mm (35mm eq:127mm).

« The tail has many important functions. It acts as a rudder
when the animal jumps from high places, as a warm covering
during the winter, as a signal to other eastern grey squirrels
indicating an individual’s mood, and perhaps as a sunshade.
Finally, the tail can be used to distract a pursuing predator. »

Merci.

Asbed

Very touching, as well as sad and informative NOTE. Thanks for such well written NOTE.
Nice to see this beautiful Squirrel on snow. In India where I live, don't get snow, except Refrigerator.
Well details and natural color. I like such photograph too where we can cherish the beauty of the species natural habitat.
Thanks for showing such atmospheric photograph,
Best wishes,
Srikumar

Hello Asbed,
I see quite a few squirrels with tail injuries such as this here in our area of Ohio. I figure it is either hawks or maybe even a neighborhood dog or cat which caused them. Your little friend doesn't seem to be hindered by his short come as it feeds in the snow. Nicely focused and showing good exposure, especially in the white snow.
We have had very little snow so far this year. Just a light dusting on the ground at the moment, but really cold weather is supposed to be hitting here tomorrow.
Ron
