[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I believe this is called a Altocumulus Standing Lenticularis Cloud.
Where I live we have Chinook winds which bring warm weather. The winds are associated and create Lenticular clouds and a Chinook Arch.
High winds are very common during the Chinook. On this day there were very high winds and though this wasn't part of the Chinook Arch, it was very interesting to watch this cloud form and then disappear.
It's fun to watch clouds and try to make a few shapes out. I thought this looked like the top of someone head walking through the clouds.

Hello Janice,
Beautiful photograph of this Cloud Formation. It would be better if we could see how far it stretches; to find out exact ID.
To me, it looks like 'UPPER PORTION' ( which you described as SOMEONES HEAD ) of "Shelf Cloud". It's a low and horizontal cloud whereas ACSL, is stationary HIGH ALTITUDE cloud and normally aligned perpendicular to the wind direction.
Here, I can see (Can't see full length though ) it is attached to the base of the parent cloud.
Moreover, the shape of the cloud not clearly looks like either UFO or lens-shaped.
But, it's not possible to remark clearly that it's 100% Self cloud and 100% not ACSL, just watching this photograph. You were there, so you know better the situation of the formation.
Thanks for showing such natural phenomenon,
Regards,
Srikumar
