[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Owen is a 12kg jumbo gourami residing at the Metro Toronto Zoo. Owen is the largest of all gouramis. They are known by the scientific name Osphronemus goramy.

This type of fish normally lives in the lakes and forest streams and rivers of Indonesia where they eat fruit and other vegetation that falls into the water. Because they swallow fruit whole it may even help to transport seeds that can germinate after they have eliminated them.

Giant Gouramis can breathe moist air, so they can survive for extended periods out of water. They use floating plants as a cover.

A difficult shot well taken. I remember going to the Toronto zoo last fall and taking several pics of this stunning old fish. Unfortunately all of them got the click-on-delete treatment. Your photo is sharp. The angle is excellent, giving a good view of the head and a good sense of the size of the body. Bravo, Elton!

Owen is an awfully handsome fish isn't he? I'm amazed at how clear and sharp his features are, a job well done.

Hello Owen, err... sorry I mean Elton
You did great work to capture this character. Those of us who have tried to photograph life inside an aquarium know very well that this kind of shot do not come as easy as it might seem.
You've got the glass to cope with (dirt, scratches, reflection, etc.), then the water (colouration, debris, density, etc.) has an effect, the internal lighting (directly overhead and normally close to the subject), and of course stay away from a flash unless you want to turn a beautiful colour scene (as you remember seeing it in the aquarium) into the dullest most unexpected murky coloured photo that you can imagine.
Your exposure & lighting, DOF & BG, colour, and composition were all very well done, showing the details and textures very nicely.
Good work and TFS.

Hi there Owen! You are a giant beauty, and nice to meet you.
He is very sharp and clear Elton, and is swimming by so gracefully. Well captured,

Great image, especially through the glass, and quite a unique fish - I'm sure I haven't seen it before.

Très bien.
Merci, Elton.
Désolé, je n'ai pas le temps aujourd'hui d'écrire des commentaires complets. Très bien fait. Icône bien méritée.
