THE ROLL OF A PRAIRIE COULEE

There is a big relationship between the the prairie coulee, wildlife, and flora. A coulee provides shelter from wind, rain and the elements. Coulees usually hold more rain and moisture and therefore more trees, shrubs and grasses can grow. Coulee's provide shade from the summer heat and warmth during cold winter storms.

Coulee's can have their own little ecosystems and micro-climates. You can see plants growing in coulee's that you don't see on the wide open prairie.

The name coulee was first used by early Frence Canadian voyageurs crossing the Great Plains. In their westward searches, they found the main water courses in a large area fringed with intricate systems of treeless valleys which they called coulees, from the French "couler" to flow. Some of these coulee's had intermittent streams during wet season. Coulee's varied from gentle depressions to steep-walled valleys.

Hi Janice ! Very beautiful landscape, as usual from you ! These rock formations are really amazing. Excellent composition and POV, and beautiful natural colors. The blue and orange flowers add a nice touch of color. Very well done !

Almost like an oasis in the desert. A mimi ecosystem with a larger ecosystem. Beautiful unspoiled landscape scenery. Colors and detail look excellent with a great feeling of depth. Well done!

Hi Janice
I have learned so much about prairie landscapes, coulees, and hoodoos in your last three postings which I have critiqued. So, thanks for the interesting notes on these subjects. It is amazing to see how these varied ecosystems exist in close proximity to one another yet they are totally different in climate and habitat content. The hoodoos in this shot are quite amazing formations.
An excellent composition giving us a beautiful insight of the environment explained in your useful notes. The colours are very natural, the details are great with exceptional DOF, and the exposure was perfect.

This one is the best of the bunch so far, Janice! Great composition to show the hoodoos in front of the river and opposite revierbank. I like that POV. You note will help me appreciate my walks to work more. Well done.

Hi Janice,
hoodoo that picture? You do that that picture and I like it.It is so neat how with the harder cap stones on these formations,the under laying softer material gets removed by water and wind.I understand that there have been dinosaur fossils found in this area of Alberta.This composition is very nice with the point of view that you have used,the only thing that could make it better would be a harder focus or be a little closer in.Well done on something you don't see everyday. Bob
