Bald Eagle: a profile
Haliaeetus leucocephalus

I present you my new friend, Tim. I met him to the Ecomuseum yesterday (see my note of yesterday). It is a bird impressing by its size and its look.
We did not shake hands.

Not at risk in Canada
Vulnerable in Québec

Population status: The Bald Eagle is almost exclusively a North American species. Although a third of the population (roughly 100 000 individuals) is found in Alaska and British Columbia, the species' range includes a number of other regions in the United Status and most of Canada.
In Québec, isolated pairs of the species are scattered over a vast area, except on Anticosti Island, where a number of resident birds exist in a small concentrated population. Currently, roughly 70 Bald Eagle territories have been identified, although this figure could very well double in the future. Many water bodies providing suitable habitat for the species have not yet been surveyed; since 1994, five new active nests have been found on average every year in Québec.
Conservation considerations and measures: Although Bald Eagle populations have been doing better recently, they still only represent a fraction of the original numbers.
The species underwent an initial decline when the continent was settled. Labelled harmful to salmon fishing and dangerous for domestic animals, the species was severely persecuted for many years. A second decline occurred in the mid-20th century, when the massive use of organochlorine pesticides (including DDT) resulted in thin-shelled eggs and dead or deformed embryos.
Fortunately, the deliberate trapping and slaughter of raptors and extensive use of organochlorine pesticides are now a thing of the past. They have been replaced by conservation measures such as the installation of nesting platforms and protection of nest sites. Such actions can only help restore this majestic bird, which is still vulnerable in many regions of Québec.

I hope you like Tim.

Oh, beautiful! This is a fantastic close-up and the frame matching his beak really sets it off. Great descriptive note, too.

An excellent portrait of this bald eagle. Great detail and color here. We have a large amount of bald eagles that come to our area at this time of the year to feed in the open waters of the Mississippi River.

Wonderful detail in this portrait, Luc. Good job. I have started looking for the ones that come down here to New England for the winter, but haven't seen them yet. Can't wait.

Beautiful photo. Great details, good sharpness, colors and DOF. Nice shot.

Hi Luc

Awesome portrait. He appears to have a grin on his face. Was it a private joke? The sharpness is just excellent and the colours on the bird are great. Plumage detail fantastic. Great note and I like the frame. Congratulations on a wonderful image. TFS.

What an aristocratic profile you have caught here Luc. King George even has a slight smile on his face. Excellent capture. Well done...

What can I say Luc, the is a perfect shot of a bird head I think, the pof and dof are exelent, the details are great, fantastic colours, great job, great note

Nice mug shot of this fellow, very good sharpness on his face, good colours and POV.

Great portrait of George , Luc.
Very nice colours, details and pose.
You did a great work.

No I do not like him - I LOVE him! Just remind me NOT to use his hairdresser!
This fish eagle was the first one I ever knew, long before I started birding, and the white head gear always reminds me of a mask or helmet like in knight, in some strange way, especially when the feathers make such a lacy hood or mantle over his shoulders.
This is one superb photo, Luc!

Excellent portrait of the bald eagle. Very good details and sharpness.Good note as usual.
Thanks for posting

Wonderful portrait Luc. Perffectly sharp and showing even the slightest details in the plumage. Well handled light and very natural colours. All over a perfect presentation - well done.

Bravo!

WOW Luc this is stunning. The sharpness in this shot is simly incredible. The composition is perfect for this portrait as well. The only problem with this shot is that it is not mine!

Very well done and thanks for posting

He doesnt seem to be bald and has feathers in all the rightplaces - as far as I can see. :)
