General Description

By Nora Bryan

The Evening Grosbeak is a year-round Alberta resident, usually in the northern half of the Province, but may be found in the southern mountains and the Cypress Hills as well. This big-beaked bird is a common winter visitor to central and southern Alberta towns and cities.

Any type of deciduous, coniferous or mixed woods provides suitable breeding habitat for this distinctive yellow and black member of the finch family. In winter, flocks of these gregarious grosbeaks favour yards with suitable cover and platform feeders stocked reliably with sunflower seeds.

When not stuffing themselves at winter feeders, grosbeaks use their specialized beaks to crack the winged seeds of Manitoba maple (boxelder) and green ash trees. In spring, swelling buds of poplar and willow are relished, and in summer and fall, the birds gorge on the ripening berries of pincherry, Saskatoons and other juicy morsels.

A nest of twigs, roots, lichens and mosses lined with soft materials is constructed at the end of a tree branch. Two to five bluish green darkly flecked eggs are incubated for up to 14 days, and young are fledged in another two seeks.

Muy buen retrato de este picogordo, que es pariente de nuestro picogordo Coccothraustes coccothraustes al cual le tengo muchas ganas.
Un saludo y gran foto.

Hello Jeanpaul,
Lovely picture of this bird! I like the natural fel to it. The details are very good. Framing seems to break some rules ;-) but I like it because it allows to see some of this very interesting BG.

Hi Jean Paul.
You managed to capture a very nice specimen of this bird species. Excellent plumage and colours, perfect condition of state, solid look, assured pose. The scenery, as always for your shots of this series, is wonderful. May be a weak noise is noticeable a bit. But this is not a problem at all. I like the bright lighting of your picture so much too. Superb done and TFS.
Alexei.

bonjour JP
la note est excellente et instructive.
c'est un oiseau coloré que je n'avais jamais vu,un point de vu interressant et une bonne netteté.
par contre je trouve le BG trop bruité.
