Blue Jay
Cyanocitta cristata

Blue Jays are one of our most easily recognized birds. They are bright blue with black and white markings. They grow to about 12 inches long. Blue Jays have a crest (pointy feathers on their head).

Blue Jays can be seen in forests, parks, and yards. Basically, you see them anywhere there are oak trees, since acorns are their favorite food.

Blue Jays migrate for the Winter, but we see them year-round in Virginia. Even though our Summer Blue Jays fly south, new ones from the North come in. The opposite is true in the Spring.

Blue Jays build a nest in a tree out of sticks, grass, lichens, moss, rootlets, and paper. They seem to prefer nesting in pine trees. Females lay four to six greenish eggs with brown spots.

The male Blue Jay feeds the female while she sits on the eggs. When young Blue Jays hatch, both parents feed them.

Blue Jays fledge (leave the nest) after about three weeks.

Blue Jays are omnivorous, which means they eat plants and animals. Their favorite food is acorns from oak trees, but some other things they eat are fruit, nuts, seeds, insects, mice, frogs, small birds, eggs, beechnuts, and caterpillars.

To eat a nut, a Blue Jay holds it with its feet while it cracks it open with its bill.

Blue Jays do not like to share. They will chase other birds away from food sources, and they will carry food off and hide it. Many times they do not find their food again later, and this helps new plants grow from the nuts and seeds they lost

A beautiful winter nature photo! Perfect exposure with brilliant colors and excellent detail on the jay. I like your composition.

Bonsoir Jeanpaul,
J'adore dans cette image la composition et le bleu dans les ailes et queue. Depuis quelques jours j’essaie de photographie une madame geai, mais sans résultat,peut-être ce week-end,
merci,
Mircea

Gorgeous expression on this Bolduc Jay. Very good JeanPaul.

The PoV is very nice. Such a excellent presentation of this bird in a wintersetting. It speaks volumes.

I am glad that JeanPaul doesn't mind sharing, eh! Jay

Very cute indeed, quality, sheer quality.

Hi Jeanpaul,

Beautiful blue jay. Perfect color, pose and you show him off so well.

Are those mounds of snow on the tree?

Jane

Hi Jeanpaul,

The color and exposure are basically good, but the bird seems to be just a little bit flat. It was not lit as well as the tree. See if you like my attempt at adjusting in the workshop.

Composition is often more interesting if the bird (or any other animal) appears to be looking into the frame rather than out of it.

Regards,
Joel

Hi Jeanpaul,
Very well captured bird.
Nice crisp colors and details.
Great work.

Nice, fluffed up, at rest posture of the bird, JP. Thanks to you, now I know a lot about Blue Jays :-).
Well composed shot with sharp focus. I like the placement of the subject off left to show the blobs of snow on the branches.
TFS and bye.

Salut Jean Paul,
Les geais bleus ont l'air d'être tout le temps autour de ta maison. Celui-ci s'y est installé avec bonheur, comme on peut le voir. Belle composition de l'image avec l'oiseau décentré.
Meilleures salutations

Hello JP,
Seems like you have quite low temperatures for the time, your feathered friend looks like a big ball!
Lovely details, and I adore the pose as he is throwing a glance in your direction...
Well composed image!

Salut JeanPaul,
another wonderful shot of the blue jay. Very nice DOF to get the entire bird into very nice focus. The colors and details are fabulous. I would like a little mor space to the riht of the birs, but otherwise a fine composition.
TFS..Sky

Allo Jean-Paul,

Merci,
Claudine

Hi Jean Paul.
I like pictured scene so much. Cute pose of the beautiful bird, nice set of tree branches and trunk, pretty snow balls, wonderful combination of lights and dark parts of the shot. Colours, details and sharpness are perfect as usual for your pictures. POV and DOF are likable to me too. Only composition is disputable a bit. But I understand very well that in this case you could not act differently. My compliments and TFS.
Alexei.
