...
Decades after school, I still remember the origin of "January" -- the two-faced mythical being
that looked back into last year and forward to the coming one.

This photo titled "First Reflection", which shows us the first rays at sunrise is dedicated to my mother-in-law. Her birthday was on the last day of the first month...

Jan 31st 2007 had a very cold start here. The temperature was -18C... and the ocean was "boiling" well before sunrise. I started my photoshoot in the pre-dawn, about half an hour before the actual sunrise. Other shots from this shoot may follow.

PS For Horia & Loot's benefit I want to mention that I didn't wear my balaclava < but should have , brrrrrr!!! >

Tech talk:
Photo as shot; scaled to 30% using max compression factor to fit 200Kb; cropped to fit 800 pixels.
No colour, contrast or other adjustments.
Compo: I chose to leave the sky/sea ratio as is, in keeping with the Janus theme. < an alternative will be in WS >

Enjoy!

Hi Jaak,

The river and misty gives a very nice subject for a excellent picture, also a little bit spooky, a lovely gift to your mother-in-law.
Beautiful composition and nice colours too!

Best regards,
John.

NICEly DONE!!
Really great shot of both the sunrise AND the "boiling" sea!!

I liked the composition of this photo, with Mother Nature filling in the blank spots!! You did well with the clarity of the background, while keeping the foreground, though very dark, focussed.

Nice job in all aspects!!

Hi Jay,
You know if you would warm up you wouldn't have all that fog in your picture, LOL. Great job with this capture Jay thanks.

Your dedication sure paid off.I love the misty sunrise, birds and all.The colours are well saturated and the reflections on the water are very beautiful. The silhouette of the foreground balances the shot nicely.TFS

Hi Jay

Another really beautiful post from you!
The warm sunny light here is excellent and it almost seem like us, the viewers, can feel it while it is rizing.
The timing is great, the POV is exceptional and the composition(s) are lovely.
I also love the misty feel of the shot and the contrasting dark FG, too.
A delightful picture...well worth the brrrrrrrr :))

Bravo and TFS

Hi Jay

Ha-ha-ha, or should I say shame? A man who has a balaclava and doesn't wear it at -18°C sure are either stubborn and looking for trouble, or maybe old age is taking its toll and he has become very forgetful. I just hope your mother in law will appreciate this dedication so much that she would tend to you when you catch a dreadful flu.

You succeeded in showing the fog very well in this shot. The obvious cold that created this ‘boiling & steaming’ effect is well contrasted by the warm colours of the rising sun. The composition is great and the exposure was well handled.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
