These are geometric columns of basalt that cover the walls of the Santa Maria Regla canyon and its river. There are also four small waterfalls. The columns measure about 30 meters in height. The site is located in the state of Hidalgo, central Mexico.

Hola Pedro,
Very nice image. ..
Well composed, nice colours and good details.
Best wishes,

Hello Pedro,
Very impressive basalt columns. Why the strong tendency towards hexagonal geometry when certain structures are tightly packed ... such as also the cells in a bees' nest, for example? And why does one see this with basalt but not with granite, for example? Your photo makes one think and so it is meaningful. Well done indeed.

Hello Pedro,
I have never witnessed formations such as this, they are stunning to say the least. They remind me of a huge naturally formed pipe organ. Beautiful coloration and super sharp focus. Excellent DOF and just the right amount of exposure. Well done!!

Hello Pedro,

Very impressive presentation of this Barranca De Alcholoya which are lined by polygonal columns between 100-165 ft high. One of my favourite subject during my student life. If you want to know (I think you know) the origin of those formation, you have to dating back to the rapid cooling of Lava during a spill over million of years.

Beautiful presentation of these geometric beauty.....unique in the world, better know as 'Basalt Prisms'......derived from igneous rock outcrop.

You may find such Basalt formation all over the world. Such as, Ghenh Da Dia, Vietnam; Akum Island sea cave, Alaska, Giant's Vausewsy, UK, Svartifoss, Iceland etc.....

Thanks for showing such beautiful creation of mother nature,
Regards,
Srikumar
