[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a species of Neotropical butterfly in the family Riodinidae, found from Mexico to Peru.
There are 3 Rheto species: R. periander, R. dysonii and R. arcius, which has much longer hindwing tails.
It is usually found singly in the vicinity of streams or ditches. It occurs in rainforest and cloudforest at altitudes between 0-1200 meters, but is commonest between about 400-800 meters. The butterfly can be seen throughout the year.
