Mexican Prairie Dog. Cynomys mexicanus.

It is a wonderful experence to see this species of prairie dogs in wild running from one burrow to another in his Natural Habitat. I have the privilege to see them very often every time I go to work in the Ranch, becouse I have to pass near by were they really live.

Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata
Subphylum: Vertebrata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Rodentia
Suborder: Sciuromorpha
Family: Sciuridae
Subfamily: Xerinae
Genus: Cynomys
Species: Cynomys mexicanus

This species of prairie dog has a fairly limited distribution; it is found only within parts of Mexico.

These prairie dogs prefer to inhabit rock-free soil in plains with an altitude of 1600-2200 meters (5250-7200 ft). They are found in the regions of southern Coahuila and northern San Luis Potosi in northern Mexico, where they eat herbs and grasses native to the plains where they live. They acquire all of their water from these plants. Although mainly herbivores, they have been known to eat insects or (very rarely) each other.

Saludos
Luis52.

Hola Primo,

I don't think I have ever seen a Prairie Dog in the wild. And I don't think I have seen one in this pose. I love the way he is holding the stem. The face is adorable and the paws are wonderful. Nice natural colors and excellent details of the face, coat, and paws. Looks great in the natural setting.

It seems that it smells the flower.

Hola Luis,

Hello Luis,
Excellent capture of this little Prarie Dog busily eating away! Great details and beautiful colours. Well composed too. Strange that they should be called 'dogs', not much similarity to a dog! :-)
