General Description

North American RangeThe Black-throated Sparrow is a small, gray sparrow that has a distinctive black throat, with a bold white stripe above its eye and another down its cheek. Adults are not streaked. The black tail is outlined in white except at the tips of the middle tail feathers. Juveniles, who retain this plumage into October, lack the black throat of adults and are lightly streaked.

In winter, loose flocks feed on open ground. They walk or run, often with their tails cocked upward. Males sing from atop low bushes.

Adapted to dry habitats, Black-throated Sparrows can survive long periods of time without supplemental water, obtaining moisture from the seeds and insects that make up their diet. In the hottest part of the summer, however, supplemental water is necessary. In the winter, seeds make up the majority of their diet. During the breeding and nestling season, insects become more important. When available, berries and other fruits, as well as fresh green shoots, are also part of their diet.

The timing of the breeding season may vary depending on rainfall and available food. The male sings to defend its nesting territory and to attract a female, and they form a monogamous pair. The nest is located in a low shrub, well hidden and close to or on the ground. The nest is an open cup of grass, small twigs, and other plant fibers, lined with fine grass, plant down, and hair. The female incubates the 3-4 eggs for 12-15 days. The female broods, and both parents feed the young. They leave the nest at 10-11 days, and most pairs raise two broods each year.

A classic shot, Luis. Like a painting in an illustrated book on birds. The best ever pose of the bird against a BG that could not be better. Kudos to you for creating this work of art!

Hello Luis

Very beautiful photo of the Black-throated Sparrow,
with very fine POV and framing, great focus
sharpness and details, very beautiful bokeh
of the background, and what a beautiful
eye-contact with you, TFS

Hi Luis,
Wonderful sparrow. Amazing clarity and perfect pleasing compostion. Another winner for you!

About as clear as they come without flying right out of the screen. Natural colours suggest spot on white balance. I can even make out the bark of the tree very well.

Hello Luis
First class image quality!
Thanks for sharing

El arte de la fotografía no es el de la pintura, pero a pesar de ello
no es difícil reconocer tu trabajo a un kilómetro de distancia por unas
caracteríaticas muy marcadas que ejecutas perfectamente. Yo y ves, a ratos
libre me dedico ( como tú ) a cazar pajarillos y la verdad es que también es
un placer la observación de las aves.
Impresionantes la luz y los colores en tu trabajo. Cuidada y elegante
pose del ave con un suave fondo made in Luis.
Un abrazo y buen fin de semana: Josep Ignasi.

Great shot luis, great subject composition and focus,

maybe a tad more color saturation?

Hello Luis,
What an interesting and elegant-looking Sparrow this is! I love the way it's watching you from its perch! A superb capture, pin sharp and in lovely colours. A fine background and well composed too.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hallo Luis
What a beautiful, beautiful bird! And so charming. Looking at this Black-throated Sparrow, I see in my minds eye a proud and noble Englishman, maybe Prince William on his weddingday? Ha-ha my imagination is running away with me, but I cannot help it. This is a pretty, perfect, picture. My themes have gone haywire (I do not know why) and I am not sure if it will accept this image in the theme box but if not I want you to know it should actually be amongst all the other PPP's in the box because it is certainly a Pretty, Perfect, Picture and as Ram said "Like a painting". Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
