Hi Ninfa,
from which planet is this "thing" coming?
Can it realy be a butterfly - wow - mother nature is sometimes very creative!
Those colours and the design - this is marvelous. I also love to see how small it is.
Excellent post, something new here on TN, that's fantastic, thank you very much.
Have a good evening, bye bye

What a beautifull small butterfly! I've never seen one like this in my life. I'm glad your knuckle is on the photo also to get a sense of it's small size. Great colours on it and super detail. Thanks for this interesting post!

Ninfa:
What an incredibly exquisite little creature! I am absolutely clueless as to species, but would love to find out more about it. At a guess, it might be an exotic lycaenid. Anyone? Please? Well spotted, and many thanks for showing it to us.
Best wishes, Nigel.

Hi Ninfa.
What a beautiful kind of butterfly, what impressed me is the dimention of the insect. And you got it well with your hand, that show us the scale of the butterfly.
Great colours, good DOF, POV and sharpness.
Good work.

Very well caught. Nice colours and sharpness.
As for identification, quite hard, the tropical butterflies are so many that I think there are for sure some species unknown to science. It's sure Lycaenidae, maybe some Strymon cestri local subspecies, maybe something else related.

Hi Nimfa
Incredible creature. I don't think we have them in South Africa. Lovely colourful butterfly and excellent details. Very good capture of such a small animal.

Hi, Nimfa,
that funny tiny butterfly on your fingertip belongs to the Nemeobiidae family which is possibly closely related to Lycaenids, and wide spread in the Neotropics.
I think the exact ID is:
"Anteros carausius (Westwood 1851)".
or "Fuzzy-legged Metalmark".
Have a look at: http://www.naba.org/chapters/nabast/Anteros.html
http://www.mariposasmexicanas.com/anteros_carausius.htm
http://www.funet.fi/pub/sci/bio/life/insecta/lepidoptera/ditrysia/papilionoi dea/lycaenidae/riodininae/anteros/
Your picture is much higher in quality than any other picture of that crazy little species in the web. Thank you for that puzzle our friend Nigel (Merlin) has made me aware of.
Best regards,
Peter

Saludos Carlos.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful image.
Most probably this speceis is Anteros carausius, but is not a Nymphalid but a RIODINIDAE. The RIODINIDAE are exclusively in the Neotropics from southern Mexico to Brasil and are a family related to Lycaenidae.
