Diagnostic description: The male measures 86 cm. and it weighs 3 kgs., and the female measures 64 cm. and you/he/she weighs 1.3 kgs. It is very big and of robust body and wide wings.
The adult is black for under and for above black with a strong shine or metallic green luster. The covers superior eaves and inferior are white and conspicuous. The males besides being much bigger, present a prominent crest and the wide part of the face is black and naked, with red caruncles. The pick is crossed of black and whitish and the paws are black.
The immature specímens is browner and less more lustrous; alone they present a white square above the wing.


Habitat: They live in courses of water of all type, located in areas forest, in gulches and rivers inside gallery forests, swamps with trees or swamps.


Reproduction: They make their nest in a big cavity of a tree, usually quite high of the floor, typically in a gallery forest. The nest has little or any lining. In occasions it nests on the floor. They put from 8 to 10 eggs of white color. They reproduce mainly during the rainy station.

Stationality: They make marked seasonal movements, related with the change of the level of the water in their habitat.

Feeding: They often forage in open areas, even in swamps and grain camp. They feed of seeds that include corn and rice, roots and, in occasions, frogs, crabs and insects.

Behavior: They usually form flocks, although you/they can be observed solitary or in even. They usually sleep in trees. The males are aggressive among them.

Uses: It is a species appreciated by the hunters for the sport hunt and also to take advantage of their meat. On the other hand, this duck has been tamed by the man to use his meat and his eggs.

Distribution: is found from the north of Mexico until the west of Colombia, east of Peru and the north of Argentina.

This is much different from our NZ Muscovies, but they ahve been engineered out here I think.
