[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a female Harris's Hawk/Parabuteo unicinctus

Another Raptor I photographed at the TreeHouse Wildlife Center. "Shannon" was a trained falconry bird, until an accident shattered her left wing and it had to be amputated. I used this pose to hide the fact that a large part of her left wing is gone.

Classification and Range
Harris’s hawks are in the family Accipitridae, which includes kites, eagles, accipiters (forest hawks), buteos (soaring hawks) and harriers. Harris’s hawks are considered buteos. Buteos are the most diverse group of diurnal (day active) raptors in North America with the greatest variety of habitats and prey.

Habitat
Harris’s hawks reside in semi-open habitats.
Physical Characteristics
With a wingspan of approximately 3.5 feet (1 m), Harris’s hawks are considered medium-sized hawks. They weigh between 1.25 to 2.5 pounds (.6-1.1 kg) with the males smaller than females. Their entire head and most of their body is dark brown with chestnut wing patches and a white rump patch and tail tip.

Life Span
A banded Harris's hawk lived over 12 years in the wild. Captive birds can live at least 20 years.

Fascinating Facts

Red-tailed hawks, which are common, are related to Harris’s hawks!
Harris’s hawks have been observed doing what scientists call “backstanding.” One bird stands on another back, and a third may stand on top of the other two.Scientists do not know why this is done!
Harris’s hawks are one of the most popular falconry birds in North America due to their cooperative nature!
The Harris’s hawk and Harris’s sparrow were both named by John James Audubon in honor of his good friend, Edward Harris!

Thank you very much Scott.

An impressive shot of this wonderful hawk, Scott.

So sharp and lovely the details, great POV and perfect lighting.

I think she looks a wee bit sad however, but then, I always think that creatures in captivity, whether good or bad, look sad...

A stunning post, I thank you for sharing it.

Nice portrait Scot. Details are sharp and the POV & DOF are very good. The feathers seem a wee bit too light ... Maybe adding a little contrast would have helped. Very interesting note. Well done & TFS!

Pieter
