[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is one of the largest and more common butterflies I see when I am butterfly monitoring in the summer. I do butterfly monitoring for the Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network. We walk the same route six or more times in the summer and count the number of butterflies, by type, that we see in each of the habitats our route covers. I will be posting some other common butterflies in our area in future postings.

The Great Spangled Fritillary is found throughout our area from late June through August and into early September. The species is long-lived and many individuals that are found in late August and September are very worn with frayed and even missing parts and wings. They are often seen at nectar sources such as Common Milkweed, thistles, or Joe-Pye-Weed with the Aphrodite Fritillary, and in the north the Atlantis Fritillary.

Identifying characteristics: Above, this species is orange with a variety of black markings, but is noticeably darker near the body, especially in fresh individuals. Below, this species is easily told by the wide, light band on the hind wing.

Hi Bob,
Outstanding shot of this beautiful butterfly in a fantastic pose. Very neat and sharp image with lovely colours and details. Superbly handled lighting and a perfect DOF lets the subjects stand out. Very nicely composed.

Hello Bob,
An excellent closed-wing capture of a Great Spangled Fritillary taken from a great POV with good sharpness and detail against a neutral BG.
Though I find the composition a bit too central it is a fine portrait of the species and I thank you for sharing it.

This is such a lovely butterfly with the most spectacular patterns and markings on the wings. If this was a colouring picture any child will get lost not knowing which colour to use to bring this beauty to justice. I like the way you placed the insect in the middle of the frame. This way one can observe and appreciate the finer details of the butterfly to a great extent.The colours of the flower and of the background compliments this lovely insect.Thanks for this contribution.
