Photo #3 in my series on frost flowers.
Frost flowers are formed when water inside a plant escapes through a split in the plant's skin, and meets very cold air. The water freezes quickly, but more water continues flowing, thus pushing the ice further out from the plant.
There were dozens of these beauties on a hillside near our house.
