[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a photo I took at the World Bird Sanctuary located in Valley Park Missouri. They were having a World Eagle Day celebration that was free to the public. They had many species of raptors on display. This little guy is an Eastern Screech Owl. He is only about 7-8 inches tall, and his name is "Twig"

I am afraid that many of my next posts are going to be raptor portraits. I hope you do not get bored with them. I took 350 photos on this shoot.

Eastern screech-owl Otus asio

Identification Tips:
Length: 8? inches Wingspan: 22? inches
Small, nocturnal, predatory bird
Large, rounded head with ear tufts
Yellow eyes
Dense streaking on underparts with finer barring
Some birds have rusty plumage, others dark gray
Sexes similar
Similar species:
The Eastern Screech-Owl is very similar in plumage to Western and Whiskered Screech-Owls and is best separated by voice. Other small owls lack prominent ear tufts.

Length and wingspan from: Robbins, C.S., Bruun, B., Zim, H.S., (1966). Birds of North America. New York: Western Publishing Company, Inc.

Beautiful shot!!! Why did you cut off the feet in the pic? Would have been nice to have seen the entire bird. I went for an Owl Prowl and tried to look for this little guy ... they are almost impossible to see in the wild ... needless to say, I did not see him :(
Congratulations!! Beautiful shot, wonderful sharpness, hue + sat .. only wish we could see the entire bird.
TFS,
Liezel

Hi Scott,
You've done an excellent job with this. Very sharp detail and the eyes are amazing..
Perfect light & color. Very well done mf.

Hi,
Excellent potrait and a very useful note, f5.6 was it a choice, i think you could have used f8/f11 you would have got better DOF.

Great Composition, colors, and very good POV

Hi Scott
Bring them on... I mean the raptor shoots.
Your photo is very good. The sharp details really bring out the textures and the colours on its feathers. And those eyes... staring straight at you... piercing and penetrating. Lovely stuff. Good DOF & BG too.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Wow, Scott!
What an eyes! What a colours! Bravo! Looking like portrait in studio! :-)

Hi Scott,

This owl really looks intelligent. Very sharp details, great colors and nice and wonderful background. That's were it's all about!
TFS.

Zeno.

Excellent DOF and detail. Very good POV and beautiful eyes. It's a shame you had to cut off the feet becuase of the tethers. Maybe you can try to do a close crop just on the face.

Well done

Hi Scott,
An amazingly sharp capture of this screech owl.
Great color contrast within the feathers.
Very pale eyes for an owl... interesting.

Hi Scott,
Excellent shot, superb eye detail! Colours are good, my only nit would be that the DOF is a little shallow. I'm noticing this in peoples work at the moment because it's something I'm working on myself!
Regards
Adrian

Hi Scott,
a great portrait of a owl. The most important with portait of owls are the intensive eyes and look, you have done a great work to get them sharp.
Well composed, good POV and nice colours.

Scott,
Wow....fantastic. This was the cutest little owl I have ever seen. In my opinion, it was the coolest bird there. I can't find a flaw in this picture. I noticed someone said they would have liked to have seen the entire bird but who likes to see tethers? This thing was so tiny it was unbelieveable. I wonder if we could have had some sort of way to include "scale" in our shots. I shot a few of "twigy" that turned out well but not nearly as good as this. Nice "catch light", great OOF BG, awesome use of the the dim light you had available, good texture and composition - I like that he's slightly off centered. Good job, wonderful post, it put a smile on my face.
Bring on the raptors pal!
Scott

Wow! absolutely stunning, with colour and detail...
Well done..

Mr "Twig" stares me in the eye and I like it, Scott. Why did you hide its talons, or is it claws?
A superb image, perfect in every respect. So flood us with some more and thanks for sharing.
Sorry, will get get back to give you points later.

Hello Scott,
Very good shot. Well done on framing here. Picture has good lighting and some nice details too. The DOF however seems to be a little shallow and even eyes aren't entirely in focus.
Anyway, well done on this one!
