Another raptor portrait from the World Bird Sanctuary.
A cool and overcast day kept the light level down, but it also kept the high contrast and shadows from being a problem.

Wedge-tailed Eagle
Aquila audax

The Wedge-tailed Eagle is Australia's largest living bird of prey and one of the largest eagles in the world. It reaches 0.85-1.05 m in length and has a wingspan of 2.3 m. Females are larger than males, averaging 4.2 kg in weight and occasionally reaching 5.3 kg. Males usually weigh about 3.2 kg, although they may reach 4.0 kg.

Young Wedge-tailed Eagles are mid brown in colour with reddish-brown heads and wings. They become progressively blacker for at least the first ten years of their lives; adults are mostly dark blackish-brown. There are no differences in plumage between the sexes other than that a female adult is generally slightly paler than her mate. The bill is pale pink to cream, the iris brown to dark brown, and the feet off-white.

The Wedge-tailed Eagle has long wings, a characteristic long, wedge-shaped tail, and legs that are feathered all the way to the base of the toes. In comparison, Australia's second largest eagle, the White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Haliaeetus leucogaster, has shorter, more rounded wings and no feathers on its lower legs. The White-bellied Sea Eagle is 0.75-0.85 m long and has a wingspan of 1.8-2.2 m, and weighs 2.5-3.7 kg (male) and 2.8-4.2 kg (female).

Distribution and Habitat
The Wedge-tailed Eagle is found throughout mainland Australia, Tasmania and southern New Guinea, from sea level to alpine regions in the mountains. It prefers wooded and forested land and open country, generally avoiding rainforest and coastal heaths. Eagles can be seen perched on trees or poles or soaring overhead to altitudes of up to 2000 m.

Scott:
Can I just be the first to say, that is absolutely fantastic. I wouldn't change a thing - I think it's a stunning image. Great note too!
Many thanks,
Nigel.

We are all always gonna face the fact there's gonna be contrast issues every now and then. This case it's an exception. To see such a fantastic closeup of this raptor is worth it, and is not that distracting. I did a little magic on it to see if I could fix that issue. :)

Scott,
It was windy that day and his feathers on his neck and head were flying all over the place.
all of my shot's of this Eagle looked like he had a bad punk haircut. Very fine capture from the OOF BG to the composition. Great catch light and clarity in the eyes. I had a difficult time metering the light in order to get some of the whites around his eyes. You also show how sharp this guy's beak is. Fine work..........definately a keeper!

PS. I am glad Paul mentioned the contrast issue, so I didn't have to. His workshop did well to your excellent photo as it is the only adjustment that it need.

Hi Scott!
I love this kind of portraits! Brave face, big eye and beak, perfect lines and details. Grey BG isn't maybe the best, but looks not bad at all. Bird itself is beautifull. Excellent work my friend!

Hi Scott, haven't got much time these days so struggling to keep up with my critiques. Anyway great portrait. The detail, colours, POV, and exposure all spot on. The feathers almost give it a three dimensional quality to it. Well done and TFS.
Dean.

Excellent photo, Scott, The colors, BG, DOF, POV, everything good and crisp, TFS Kyle

Hello Scott,
Very good shot! The POV and framing are great, well done on lighting and detrails too. The picture is a little gloomy in mood because of the gray BG, but overall it's very nice.
