Another raptor portrait that I had taken at the World Bird Sanctuary. Cloudy and overcast light on this day forced me into a higher ISO setting, and very shallow DOF to keep my shutter speeds acceptable for hand held shots. (Like my previous recent raptor photos) I hope you not getting tired of the raptor shots? I was actually laying on the ground to take this shot to be at eye level, keep my backround fairly clean. This was pretty funny to the other people standing around.

I liked this one for the intricate fine detail shown in that beautiful plumage.

The Tawny Eagle (Aquila rapax) is a large bird of prey. It is about 62-72 cm in length and has a wingspan of 165-185cm. Like all eagles, it belongs to the family Accipitridae. It was once considered to be closely related to the migratory Steppe Eagle, Aquila nipalensis, and the two forms have previously been treated as conspecific. However, DNA studies have shown that these birds are not even each other's nearest relatives.

It breeds in most of Africa both north and south of the Sahara Desert and across tropical southernwestern Asia to India. It is a resident breeder which lays 1-3 eggs in a stick nest in a tree, crag or on the ground.

Throughout its range it favours open dry habitats, such as desert, semi-desert, steppes, or savannah.

This is a large eagle with tawny upperparts and blackish flight feathers and tail. The lower back is very pale. This species is smaller and paler than the Steppe Eagle, although it does not share that species' pale throat.

Immature birds are less contrasted than adults, but both show a range of variation in plumage colour.

A great close-up, Scott.
Very sharp, with natural colors.
I did not realize that their mouth (yellow part) goes so far back... all the way under their eyes.
His beak is actually very short, relatively speaking.
TFS. : )

Hi Scott,
I don't think people will get tired of shots of this quality, I certainly won't. You've captured great detail, colours are good and the f/4.5 aperture has worked well. Colours are very natural and background is spot-on. Perfectly framed.

Wow Scott!
The eyes have it! Very nice!
Excellent work!

ps I'm working so much now, I might be able to buy that new camera with no problem. But, who knows when I would get to use it. I won't be going for my swamp paddle...:-( My biggest disappointment this year, but you have to be able to roll with the punches. And, there is still plenty to be grateful for.

Take care mf... Dave

Hi Scott
I don't think it gets much better than this. Noble pose, great DOF, background nicely out of focus but sharing the same color tones - I can't find anything to improve on this shot.

Hello Scott,
It´s true, details are very important, and this photo confirm it. Amaizing fine details on feathers and excellent colours, exposure and composition. I like it a lot!

Hello Scott, fantastic portrait, lovely all round. Very well done.

Hi Scott,
very exciting portrait of a raptor.
Wonderful pose, excellent details, marvellous shades of subdued colours with superb contrasts.
The distant and noble grey background getting dark towards the bird's chest could not be better. It helps to shape the bird in an absolutely perfect way, making it appear very real, stunningly three-dimensional, and very lively.
Excellent contribution. Thank you!
Best regards,
