[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
When I photographed this guy, I though maybe I had a first for TN, but I was able to find at least one prior posting of this species. Not one of my best shots, but he is so unique looking I thought it would be worth showing. I have posted another frontal pose as a workshop photo.

Taken at the World Bird Sanctuary. The light was grey and overcast, so you just have to adjust and make the most of what you have.

This small eagle had a very nasty disposition, and did not really like anyone getting near him.

Long-crested Eagle - Lophaetus occipitalis

Widely distributed in Africa south of 15°N except for e Somalia and the arid areas of the SW.

Impossible to confuse with anything else, the Long-crested Eagle is a small, dark eagle with a long, lax crest. When perching the adult looks to be a uniform blackish-brown with brownish-white tarsal feathers. Even in flight it is unmistakable with a strongly barred tail and even more obvious, from both above and below, large white wing patches. Although it's preferred habitat is woodland it can often be seen at the roadside, usually perched on a convenient fence or telegraph pole.

Hi Scott
Excellent capture of a beautiful graceful bird. There is one that I often see, not far from my home, regularly sitting on a specific telephone pole. Someday I'm going to shoot it (obviously with the camera).
Great composition, natural colours, sharp details on the DOF, excellent BG, and spot-on exposure.
Very well done and TFS.

Hi Scott

I love this. His head feathers are fantastic. Beautiful plumage colour. Nicely composed. :-)

Hi, Scott
This is a fine portrait of this unusual little eagle. It's quite common in parts of Africa, and is often seen in villages hunting rats and other small animals. When fully adult, it is a very striking black and white, so yours is still a youngster. Thanks for posting this - it's a while since I have seen one.
Best wishes, Nigel.

Hi Scott,
An unusual looking bird, I've never even heard of it before, let alone seen one, so it's a first for me :-) A nice shot, very good detail and colours. I think this is a hard bird to photograph because of the head plumage. A great shot I think!

I have never even heard of such an eagle, Scott, so thanks for posting it.
His bright yellow eye is so clear and the details around the face are quite sharp.
It is a great POV for showing off that crest.

Hi Scott,
superb portrait, beautiful colours and very good DOF. Very nice eagle. Interesting note. Well done.
Rgs, Aleksander

This bird seemed a little herky-jerky. He seemed more out of his element than any other bird there that day. Twigy the owl was the best behaved.....eh?
I like how you have slowed him down so I can see him. The wind may have played a part in his restlessness. I couldn't get acceptable light, you did. Crystal-clear shot with a lot of focus on the eyes. Great shot, it's a thing of beauty!

Hi Scott,
I would place him in America with the Comanches in the back of the mind.
Proud animal!
Remark...I should have cloned or cropped the little white stroke down under.
