I took this shot on a recent trip to the World Bird Sanctuary located in Valley Park, Missouri. I had never heard of a Lizard Buzzard, so this was a new species for me. After researching this bird, I cannot find where this bird has ever been posted on Trek Nature. So this may be a first for this specific species of buzzard to be shown here. Besides, he is the cutest Buzzard I have ever observed!

This bird was taken from the wild in Africa and was brought over to the United States to be sold in the black market pet trade. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service confiscated him. He was brought to The World Bird Sanctuary and his feathers were so damaged that they were unable to identify him until he molted and grew in new feathers. He is the only known Lizard Buzzard in the United States .

Lizard Buzzard

Kaupifalco monogrammicus

Just over a foot tall, this thick grey hawk’s most prominent feature is their orange cere (the skin around the beak) and legs. They are widespread in parts of Central Africa. They like to eat…lizards!

RANGE Sub-Saharan Africa: widespread from Senegal to western Sudan and south to Natal. Absent from the most arid areas of the Horn of Africa and the south-west and from the highlands of East Africa and much of South Africa. Resident and fairly common in much of range.

HABITAT Open woodland and thornbush country, cultivated land with scattered trees and plantations.

Hi Scott
A cute Buzzard in deed, he looks similar to a Merlin (a type of falcon). He has such a great feather pattern. You captured him so nicely on his perch. Great lighting, not harsh at all. A great portrait of this cute little buzzard. Good notes and framing.

The picture is great! The POV and colors are very beautiful and excellently managed. Also the sharpness is good and the look in his eyes is impecable!
Very well done!

Bravo and TFS

Awesome post my friend. I have been waiting for you to post this guy! I am totally fascinated by the uniqueness of this bird. His chest plumage and bright orange feet make him a beautiful bird. It's hard to believe he is a buzzard, isn't it. I think your composition here is perfect and the shallow DOF is simply outstanding. I posted a forum on TL, asking for "One of a kind" photo's, this one fits the bill. At least in the U.S. I got some decent shots of this guy, this one is perfect. I am glad you left some notes, it will make people appreciate this bird more.
Great job,

Hi, Scott.
Interesting bird. Very good exposure, light and composition. Good details on bird.

Hi Scott

Congratulations with this TN first. I believe you are correct in saying that this bird did not feature on TN before. I have gone a bit further just to see what photos are available on the internet. What I found is that this photo, although not the only one of this species, is (IMHO) by far the best available on the whole of the internet. Very well done.

During my recent Kruger Park trip I was fortunate enough to see a total of 6 of these birds. Unfortunately I did not have an opportunity to photograph any one of them as I could only view it through my binoculars and lick my lips. It is a lovely bird and your amazing photo does extreme justice to its beauty. You’ve captured exquisite details of its magnificent plumage and reproduced the colours in all its spectacular splendour. Signal red is the international colour to indicate danger, but unfortunately for any lizard or rodent that falls prey to this bird, they always see those brightly coloured claws too late. The OOF potpourri of colours in the BG compliments the dove-grey colours of this little raptors plumage. The exposure was perfectly managed and it seems like you had to pull all the stops with ISO400, F/11, 1/40 shutter speed, and fill-in flash with even red-eye reduction (huh?).

Fabulous work my friend and TFS.

Hello Scott,
Superb details in this well groomed fellow!
He gives you a lovely pose, and the spots of strong colours make a great contrast...
Well composed presentation!

Hi Scott
I like this one very much. It is a very cute little bird. Great detail all over, but especially at the nose and beak. Nice contrast with the out of focus background.
Regards and TFS

Yes, that is a good looking bird, and I'd think it closer to the falcon family, too. Nicely shot. I like the subtle light of your flash sill. You included the claws and the tail, too, so that makes for a nice complete image of the "boyd." The bg is a bit busy, but looking at the diffrence in focus between the front and back side of the bird I'm not sure you could have gotten away with much shallower DoF.

He is a beauty Scott, great detail in the pens and a great pose on him. I feel the busy background distracts a little but that's my only nit. Well done..
