[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a Tawney Eagle portrait that I took at the world Bird Sanctuary. The handler that was showing this bird was kind enough to move around at my request so I could capture this dramatic sunlight on him with the deep shade for a backround. I did use fill flash to open up the dark area under his eyebrow some. I would also like slightly more space on the right side for him to look into. I was so close that I was filling the frame with him more than I should have. I did not give myself enough space to work with in photoshop. I was just to excited to be so close to this guy and have such a great chance to take this shot that I got carried away. At a later time I will probably add space in photoshop before making any prints.

The Tawny Eagle (Aquila rapax) is a large bird of prey. It is about 62-72 cm in length and has a wingspan of 165-185cm. Like all eagles, it belongs to the family Accipitridae. It was once considered to be closely related to the migratory Steppe Eagle, Aquila nipalensis, and the two forms have previously been treated as conspecific. However, DNA studies have shown that these birds are not even each other's nearest relatives.

It breeds in most of Africa both north and south of the Sahara Desert and across tropical southernwestern Asia to India. It is a resident breeder which lays 1-3 eggs in a stick nest in a tree, crag or on the ground.

Throughout its range it favours open dry habitats, such as desert, semi-desert, steppes, or savannah.

This is a large eagle with tawny upperparts and blackish flight feathers and tail. The lower back is very pale. This species is smaller and paler than the Steppe Eagle, although it does not share that species' pale throat.

Immature birds are less contrasted than adults, but both show a range of variation in plumage colour.

Hi Scott,

Beautiful portrait showing sharp and clear details. The light was also in your favour and the DOF and BG came out nicely.

Hi Scott!

Sharp guy :-) This is perfect portrait my friend. Everything is just right. Sharpness, pose, dark BG, light on bird's head, details and colours. No nits here. Royal bird indeed.

What's about new tv-series about cops? What is on top in US now? Which one do you like/watch my friend?

Hello Scott , sharp photo of this magnificient raptor , dark bokeh is good , thanks.

Bonjour,
Toujours sévère, ce genre de volatile.
Bonne journée.

Hi Scott.
Very expressive close-up portrait. Thank you for your nice note describing the technique and conditions of shooting. It is so important for thinking photographers.

I like your POV so much, very impressive, also as well the turn of the bird. This is classic position. You have controlled lighting and applied flash very skillfully. The most important is snatched out by light. As a result the mood and image of this majestic bird are reflected perfectly. Great portrait work. My congratulations and best wishes.
Alexei.

Hi Scott

This is a very beautiful and moody portrait of this impressive tawny eagle!
I've read your notes and i was glad to hear i'm not the only one that makes that kind of mistake: get a bit too excited and getting too close when possible :) I have loads of photos with reptiles, amphibians and even some insect that are simply un-usable in any photoshop work simply because they are already too tight :D

Anyway, the technique desired here payed off and you amanged a charming image.
The fill in work is barely visible, but if you hadn't used it its absence would have probably been very visible :)
The colors and details are most lovely and the contrast given to you by the sunlight on him and not also on the BG is wonderful.
Splendid look in his eyes, too!
Great work, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

The caption suits this superb image very well, Scott. My, what fine details and colors! The drooping eyelid gives the bird a contemplative outlook.
An outstanding portrait, indeed.

Otra gran entrega Scott con tu acostumbrado toque personal... maravillosa iluminación, gran foco y agudeza y el perfecto fondo para realzar la imponente silueta del ave.
La imagen tiene tan buena definición que "puede sentirse" el filo de su pico.
Gracias y saludos... Ricardo

Another great post Scott with your accustomed personal touch... wonderful illumination, great focus and sharpness and the perfect background to enhance the imposing silhouette of the bird.
The image has so good definition that "can feel" the edge of its beak.
Thank you and regards... Ricardo

Hi Scott

This is one splendid eagle and you showed its regal poise in a truly amazing presentation.

Your mentioning of the composition and space in front of the bird taken in consideration I feel that because of the overall close-crop and since it is a portrait it did work out well enough for me. Anyway, due to the darkness in front of the bird it will not be that difficult to add in a strip of black (laboratory space) on the right. The beautiful dark BG is excellent to show-off this bird and the colours are rich and well presented. The details are very sharp, but somehow I get the impression you could have even pushed it a little more with the sharpening tool. The exposure was well controlled through the combination of the fill-in flash and natural light.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Scott,
Wahouu! That must have been quite an experience. I'll say like you, this guy was very kind to help you take this wonderful portrait. Eagles always seem so proud and you capture this nobility (new word in English for me ;) very well. Details are really amazing and the use of flash is very good. Great DOF and wonderful BG that suits you subject well. I enjoyed reading your notes, Thanks,
Claudine

Hi there Scott!

This is a wonderful and strong portrait. The light is very warm, exposure is spot on and the details are razorsharp. Perfect! Maybe a little more breathingspace in the right, but that's all.

Regards,
Pieter

Scott,
Aaaahhhh, I remember this day well. I got a few decent shots as well although again, you got the better one! Mine were a bit overexposed in some area's because I shot them in RAW I was able to fix them somewhat.
I like the profile pose and the GREAT use of light to make it look so dramatic. The composition is superbly done here buddy! The beak and eye detail are fantastic. We need to go here when I get back!
This is a great post Scott.

Just a beauty, Scott. Amazing light and clarity here. Wonderful composition and expression, too. It's not too tight for me.
Mike
It's interesting, though -- right after I bought my 300mm (70-300 zoom) I headed out the my local bird rehab center (Betty Ford for birds) and was jsut drooling with all the shots. When I got home I was surprised how tight they were, too. Something about being ABLE to probably suckered us in...

Hi dear Scott ,
excellent focus and very nice sharpness.
great composition and color of BG is nice.
very well done.
thanks my good friend.

Saeed
