[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The Fly Amanita, or Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) is very widespread, but in the East states it has a different colour, the cap being yellow instead of the more usual red.
Here on Mont Desert Island, in Acadia Ntl Park.
Thanks to Laszlo for telling us the variant's name. |

It a funny mushroom! Great job...well done!
Hi Philippe,
Good photo. Reason of the different cap colour is this isn't the well-known Amanita muscaria var. muscaria (the red and white fairytale fungus), but a variant living in Eastern North America (from the mid-Atlantic states to central Quebec), A. muscaria var. guessowii.
Tfs, best wishes from Hungary, László

Hello Philippe,
Great shot of the Amanita with wonderful detail and color!! Excellent exposure and DOF.
I was up to Arcadia National Park a few years ago and remember all the beautiful sights and sounds.
Well done!!
Ron
Hello Philippe,
A very nice capture of this Amanita.
There is a yellow Amanita that looks exactly like this called Amanita flavoconia, and that could be what you have captured here.(Oh ... I've just seen that Laszlo has a different idea too :) His ID is very likely to be correct as he is a serious mycologist.
We have lots of the red ones in our garden every autumn.
In a few weeks I will be able to see maybe 20 or 30 just 2 or 3 metres in front of me as I sit at my computer.
I have poste some from last season, and will post a few more this year.
Cheers & TFS
Steve

Good job on the lighting in this scene, it does the Amanita justice compared to the drab aged log. Nicely done Philippe!
Hi Philippe-
Again you have shown me something on my home turf that I must have passed over in my decades of trips to Acadia. I will continue to rely on the guide books, you, and Laszlo for mushroom identification. Thank you for the excellent photo.
Best regards,
Bob
