|A small local island is host to mama seals when they give birth each spring. Launching a boat to get there has to be scheduled just right due to a creek full of boulders which opens into sandbars at the start of the bay. We had a short 3 hour window to get out and back in.|
This photo is from a series where the mama harbor seal is pointed up and in the opposite direction of the approaching baby. The series shows her at multiple angles as she tilts more and more back toward the baby and then greets baby with several poses of smiles. Before departing, 2 shots appear as if mama seal is kissing baby good-bye as she sinks away in the water. I call the series, "Sealed With A Kiss". Would love to have posted the series here...
We kept our distance, using the electric motor and drifting around their rock island as the pups played, sometimes popping up very close to the boat.
Several weeks ago I counted 30 seal heads out of water all at once in another area a couple miles away, assuming they were heading over to the birthing island.
