This picture represents two firsts for me: my first dragonfly picture here in TN, and also the first post with my new equipment☺

I spent last week in Puerto Rico, USA, basically to pick up my new camera and had also the perfect excuse to take short vacations there, so I really enjoyed taken a lot of pictures.

My first impression was that the camera is a lot more big and heavy than the previous one, but in despite of the discomfort to carry all that weight with the lenses and equipment on the backpack, I get used to it very quickly.

Soon after downloading the pictures to my Mac, I discovered a “little” detail: the reduced new sRAW format (in which I shoot ALL my pictures) is not yet supported by the last updated Adobe camera Raw plugin (4.2), and there were no way to open the .cr2 format on my Mac, so I was forced to install the proprietary Canon software that comes with the camera.

Handheld with IS, crop, exposure adjustment, resized and sharpen for TN.

Roseate Skimmer (Orthemis ferruginea)

Is a common southern dragonfly. The male of the species has a rose pink and red/maroon colored abdomen. Females of the species have orange-brown abdomens with clear orangish veins and a brownish thorax with a light stripe down back. The young have a bright pinkish or purple abdomen and when they are mature adults their thorax will develop a pale bluish tint.

The wings are normally clear except for the narrow brown tips at the edges. The juveniles are brown initially in both sexes with pale stripes as well as the abdomen being uniformly brown.

It eats by foraging at the top of tall vegetation and it is an aggressive predator that takes insects that are just slightly smaller than itself. Nymphs are found in the silty bottoms of shallow streams that feed larger rivers and sinkholes especially in the state parks with lakes.

The Roseate Skimmer is widespread in North America in the United States, Central America as far south as Chile. The Roseate has watersheds specifically in Arkansas. It seems to invade new habitats and readily expands its range of known habitats such as ponds, lakes, temporary pools, canals found throughout the New World tropics, that includes the Bahamas and the West Indies and Hawaii.

Scientific classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Subphylum: Hexapoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Odonata
Suborder: Anisoptera
Family: Aeshnidae

Species: O. ferruginea

Hi Jose Miguel and very nice to see you back!

I'm glad you had a terrific trip and also that you finally realized your dream and bought a superb equipment! I wish you all the best with it and may you take thousands of brilliant picture with it.
I see you aquired a great new model of a body - the 40D - which i heared it's really fast and good and also a suprb lens with the great benefit of a IS. Good choises!!! Did you get any other lenses, too?
Before i comment on your shot, i just want to say that the .cr2 will only work with Canon's software, but it's actually a great one and very easy to use. I'm just learning to "play" with it, too, but i love how it handles :)

Now for this other premiere: this charming dragonfly!
I really like the diagonal composition you managed to get here as well s the very good DOF - f/11 - that you used in order to get the entire insect in full focus. It's a little different from the S2, huh? :))
The exposure values are also great and because of that we can all enjoy all these vivid and beautiful colors of the dragonfly and the BG, too.
Splendid shot for a first one!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: a small coincidence - my first shot posted with my new dSLR was also of a dragonfly :)

Hello Jose,
What a wonderful picture and what a beautiful species
Great sharpness and colors
Regards, Dejan

Hi Jose Miguel,
congratulations on your new camera :D
This is a quality shot of this beautiful dragonfly.
The colours are amazing.
I did a workshop... I hope you don't mind!
Well done,
Joe

p.s how did you get that small smily face after "new equipment"?

Hola Jose Miguel...

Wow! What a fantastic shot!!! I remember taken a picture of a Roseate Skimmer during my vacation in Dominican Republic in 2004 but I didn't get such a masterpiece like yours! Colors are amazing and the square composition works very well here.

Gusto mucho those great details within the wings...

So, you switch to the Canon 40D? I'm looking to swicth to the same camera next spring with a Canaon 100-400 IS USM lens to photography birds... For now I will stay with my Panasonic FZ-20 bridge for insects because I like the DOF I can obtain with it...

Which camera have you in the past? I'm a little bit worrying also about the weight... My Panasonic is so light...

Do you have more comments about the 40D? Personally I continue to be hesitating between JPEG and RAW... Do you see a real difference between both?

Muchas gracias por tu ayuda :-)

... and TFS!

Michel

So... Beside having a new camera (lucky you, I want one) you'll have to buy a new PC :) What an amazing capture of this so beautiful specie! I really am amazed as I never captured a Dragonfly decently; maybe I really need the 40-D, lol! Details, composition, exposure and colors are perfect! Not much to say before this little impressive work of art except, congratulations! Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Jose Miguel.
All the best with your new camera and this is a wonderful start. Beautiful image of the dragonfly, awesome colour and great DOF, exposure and detail.
Composition is great in the frame, excellent.

Congratulations to the new gear! And to this gorgeous shot! Well composed and with great clarity and colors! Especially those are stunning! Very well done! Cheers, Klaus

Por supuesto adoro estas libélulas. Fui tentado a notar en su vista marina previa pero atemorizado se perdería en el crujido del número. ¡Así que ambos son buenos!

Not creaked...hmmm.. I can't think of the word for crunch..anyway nice colourings as well as per above.

First of all I congratulate you on your new "big" camera and other proper equipment. It is cool. Your camera is really great. And you will get used and love it so quickly. I am sure. I see your photo model is so fine as your equipment. I think it had decided to help you to represent your new toys. Amazing dragonfly, fine colour patter, nice pose and superb details. I also like diagonal composition of the shot and perfectly coloured nice BG. F-number is selected exactly. My greetings and wishes of many nice Canon shots.

Me encantan esos colores malvas y rosados.
Enhorabuena por tu nueva cámara, pero ¿qué pasó con la anterior? Porque no me dirás que no sacaba buenas fotos en tus manos!

Hola José Miguel,
Superb capture of a Roseate Skimmer, a species that I haven't seen on TN before. You must be pleased with your new equipment as the technical quality is excellent and the POV and composition are great. Excellent contrasting blurred BG too.
Well done and TFS!

Hi JM,

We haven't had a geat year for dragonflies this year, and earlier in the year I wasn't taking pictures well enough to do them justice. But this is a gem. It is a beautiful specimen and you have captured it in find detail, with perfect pov and dof.

Interestingly I have gone through exactly the same process of you in upgrading to the 40D and finding my Mac softward didn't support the raw files and had to use the Canon conversion software. I'm glad I did. How are you finding the 40D?

Kind regards,

Mike

Hi Jose,
this is a species of dragonfly I until now have never before seen. The ruby eyes flowing into a purple/red and back to ruby is very nice to see and unusual.A finely detailed well focused shot with that great colour makes this a welcome addition to TN.Enjoy that new camera of yours because the photos you will get with it will be even better than those you had with the point and shoot you have been using because you have all the control.SLRs are tops. Thanks for showing this first and what you can do with your new camera. Hallo Jose
Being a new member to Trek Nature I am still browsing if time permits. I think at this stage my eyes are working overtime to search for anything that will grab my attention, and it is becoming a real difficult task. There are just so many talented photographers on the site and they all have such spectacular portfolios. It is upon this browsing session that I came across this most beautiful and exciting posting of your first dragonfly. The colours are just awesome and really unbelievable pretty. I have never seen a dragonfly in our area with such lovely display of colour. I really enjoyed looking at it, and I hope you can hear me clapping hands with standing ovation. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
